Nice staff. Helpful and friendly. Good prices. Delicious food. Wood fired pizza oven. Authentic. Honest. Excellent value.
This is our second time to Napoli, staying in this area.
Reason I give this small place 5 stars: I compare this to the pizza & pasta restaurant inside the train station on the 1st floor Fresca (which is more expensive and has cold staff). 'O Surdato nnammurato' is 100 times better for similar location and same menu.
We had takeaway pizza and pasta and found this place close to the train station. I thought it would be more about convenience but I was very surprised at the excellent quality and warm welcoming owner & staff.
Pizza - We had marinara and margarita con buffalo. Although these are simple pizzas, this means that each ingredient must be of great quality to pass the taste test. Nothing can hide. And these absolutely did pass the test! The tomato paste base was extra tasty, dough was fresh and bubbled up in the oven to have a delicious crispy crust.
Ragu - I have to highlight this pasta! The best! It was a generous portion with chunks of tender meat "falling off the bone" although there was no bone! It was slow cooked beef chunks, some with some fat still on to add to the flavour. Most ragu I've had were chopped meat or thick mince, never such tender slow cooked meat chunks in a thick sauce like this. This is a real ragu where the meat tastes like it's been slow-cooked in a rustic stew before being added to the pasta. Really worth the money.
Ambience - The street is busy and bustling but we did not feel unsafe. This area can get a bad reputation but only because sometimes people are racist or stereotype against Africans. We watched the shop and stall sellers next door banter with each other, joke with each other, they seemed to know everyone on the street whether Black, Chinese, Italian... and that feeling of community made us actually feel safer than some upmarket places in Rome. Was nice to people watch as we sat and waited for our meals. I would absolutely have my meal at the pizzeria when we come back.
Very pleasantly surprised at this small restaurant with a big heart and big soul.
If you're at the train station and have time, don't eat inside that station, come out here and eat some real food from a place with heart.
Also, as a testament of how this pizzeria honours Napolitan history, the name is actually from one of the most famous songs in Naples, written in 1915.
From Wikipedia: "O surdato' nnammurato (in Italian : The soldier in love ) is one of the most famous songs in the Neapolitan language , written by the Santegidiano poet Aniello Califano".
Grazie mille, O Surdato' nnammurato. May you continue for many...
Read moreWe had just arrived in Naples, and it started to rain. We were very hungry and went in search of a restaurant. We got wet like mice and entered the first pizzeria where there was a wood oven. The staff are real salespeople and are determined to get you inside. They were certainly very kind. There weren't many seats inside, but they quickly seated us at a table in the passage to the kitchen (it isn't on the photo, but you can see that passage). We laughed and weren't expecting much at all from how the place looked and where they put us, but when the pizza arrived, we were surprised to say the least. One of the best pizzas I've tried! The taste of the dough and ingredients is excellent and balanced. Due to the quality of the pizza and the charm of the people and the place, it gets a strong rating from us. Many thanks to them for my first...
Read moreJust steps from the train station this was an awesome place to come to. My husband found it on Google. Seems to have a slightly different name. The men are very friendly. He has a huge fire pizza oven. The guy showed me how to make the pizza and then I watched him put it in the oven. Amazing pizza oven pizza pizza was like under five American dollars. The breeze was wonderful on the street even in June. We’re across from the parking garage up from the train. The salami pizza was really really good. There’s even funny sandwiches with hotdogs and french fries inside of them. The Stromboli or whatever it...
