Without having decided exactly where to go for dinner, my girlfriend and I stumbled across Signora Bettola and finding its atmosphere inviting decided to head inside. It was our last night in Napoli, and knowing that we were heading further away from the coast, opted to split a whole red snapper. We complemented this with a meatball and eggplant dish following encouragement from our server.
We also opted for a bottle of wine, and selected a light and fruity white from the alluring list of options. The first dish of meatballs and eggplants arrived and featured a tasty and homely combination of flavours. The real highlight on the plate were the tomatoes, as was the the norm across our few days in the area. The next dish arrived, and following the presentation of the whole snapper, the fish was filetted and placed in a light and aromatic broth and paired with cherry tomatoes and lettuce. The method of preparation, incredibly simple in its execution, perfectly highlighted the high quality of the snapper. The fish was almost sweet in taste, perfectly cooked and coated in a delicious broth. Wilted tomatoes were a delicious addition, and the lettuce, having soaked up the broth, was savoury but still crisp.
Despite being very full, we felt it would be a shame to leave without having dessert on our last night in Napoli. My girlfriend opted for the tiramisu, myself the baba, and both were delightful. The baba was soaked but maintained a fluffy and light texture and a tiramisu was creamy and full of coffee flavour.
We left Signora Bettola delighted with the quality of the food on offer. The snapper was perhaps the highest quality fish I have ever had, and a simple, yet expertly thoughtful cooking style only accentuated the...
Read moreDo you like surprises? If so, then this is the restaurant for you. Items listed in the menu were not available. We only know this because when we asked where our appetizer was, the waiter (who was not our actual waiter) told us that he did not have any meat and cheese available. He did, however, offer us mozzarella and prosciutto (which was probably the best part of our dinner). I ordered fusilli and the catch of the day. I was told the catch of the day was sea bass. To my surprise, my (undercooked) fusilli was accompanied by a crab. Another member of our party ordered tuna and received sea bass (well, that’s what we were told it was). And finally, another member of our party ordered a meatball. I can’t report on that as she never received it. There was obviously a language barrier with us and the waiter. Unfortunately, our waiter’s colleagues appeared seemed to find amusement in his inability to communicate with his customers. I do not blame our waiter for one of the worst dining experiences of my life, but rather, blame the management as every other waitstaff member spoke English and offered no assistance. Do NOT dine at this establishment. If I could give less than one...
Read moreExcellent experience after a long day walking around Chiaia and the Spanish Quarter. We had the following: Potato croquette: crispy and tangy and delicious. Exactly what you want from a fried starter Bruschetta pomodoro: you could really taste the freshness of the (deseeded!) cherry tomatoes and fresh oregano. The quality of the olive oil also really shone through! Polpette al Sugo: We had some bad experiences with this dish before but here it was perfect! The meatballs were soft and bouncy with the right amount of cheese and pine nuts. The sauce was sweet and rich and acidic, and the broccoli rabe on the side provided an excellent bitter foil to cut through the richness of the sauce! Pasta with clams: The pasta was thick and deliviously al dente, the sauce was extremely fishy and coated the noodles beautifully, while the mussles were expertly cooked. Pasta patate con provola: esaily the best dish we tried here! The mixed pasta provided a lot of textural contrast with different shapes cooked differently providing a different level of al dente! The pork and potatoes were delicious and it was all cooked in a delicious cheesy sauce! Would definitely come back next time...
