THE SANDWICH THAT CHANGED MY LIFE (AND POSSIBLY MY SOUL)
I have eaten a lot of sandwiches in my life. Some good, some bad, some so dry they could qualify as an ancient relic in the Vatican Museum. But what I experienced just four blocks from the Vatican was not just a sandwich—it was a divine revelation between two slices of toasted brown bread.
The place? 200 Gradi. The masterpiece? "Porta Pia."
Now, I’ve been in the hotel industry long enough to know that people throw around words like “best,” “amazing,” and “must-try” way too easily. But listen—THIS. IS. IT. This is the Michelangelo of sandwiches. A sandwich so perfect that for a moment, I saw my entire life flash before my eyes… and all of it had led me to this one bite.
Picture this: warm, crisp brown bread toasted to absolute perfection. Inside, layers of truffle ham (yes, TRUFFLE HAM, because why settle for anything less than greatness?), wild mushrooms that taste like they were picked by elves in an enchanted forest, and mozzarella so melty and divine it probably has a direct line to heaven.
I took my first bite, and my soul left my body. A choir of angels started singing. A Roman emperor’s ghost whispered, “Damn, that looks good.” My taste buds? They started composing poetry. I almost fell to my knees in front of the sandwich counter. People must’ve thought I had some kind of spiritual awakening—AND THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN RIGHT.
The truffle-infused ham hit first—rich, decadent, and packing enough flavor to make my ancestors proud. The mushrooms added an earthy, umami depth that whispered sweet nothings to my palate. And the mozzarella? Oh, that creamy, melty, ooey-gooey mozzarella—it held everything together like the glue in a Renaissance painting.
Every single bite was a love letter to flavor. The balance, the textures, the way it all came together? ART. This wasn’t just a sandwich. It was a masterpiece wrapped in brown bread and toasted to golden, crispy glory.
If I had to describe this sandwich in one word? Unfreakingbelievable.
If I had to describe how I felt eating it? Like I had achieved nirvana through a deli counter.
Would I fly back to Rome just for this sandwich? Yes. Without hesitation.
Would I sell my soul for another bite? Tempting. Very tempting.
So, if you’re in Rome and you don’t go to 200 Gradi for this sandwich, I’m sorry, but you’ve failed at life. You had one job. One mission. And that was to eat this slice of heaven.
Go now. Go forth and experience greatness. And when you do, just...

Quite a lot of menu options and a really reasonable price for everything as well. And the best part is that those sandwiches are huge! They also add a good amount of olive oil on top of the toppings before closing the sandwich and also some salt. Not sure how, but it all really works well together! Love how they actually toast the sandwiches so the cheese gets all melty.
Dad got the Grillo - I believe he thought it would be a grilled sandwich which is why he got it but it was actually bigger and potatoes and something else in there but he said it was actually quite nice. I believe he thought it would be a grilled sandwich which is why he got it but it was actually bacon and potatoes and something else in there. He did say it was actually quite nice. I believe the potatoes were boiled or something in there but I'm not sure.
Custom Turkey+Zucchini+Brie+Rocket - asked for no olive oil on mine and it was still really good. Quite a neutral flavor overall and nice on its own but I was looking for something a little spicy for this meal and I added some hot sauce and it was perfect!
Piela - My brother only got this one because he saw someone else before us order it and it looked like a very beautiful loaded sandwich with a lot going on. He was not wrong. A lot of ingredients in there that they all went so so well together! A VERY premium quality ham was used and it leveled up the sandwich quite a lot. Those zucchini flowers were really un a nice touch.
I don't remember what husband ordered but from the fact that he actually finished the entire sandwich I take it he really liked it. Over the entire 10-day trip we had in Italy, this sandwich was...
Read more200 Gradi is well known for its unique sandwich style, and the presentation is definitely appealing. However, most of the menu includes pork, which limits options for those who don’t eat it. I tried a non pork option and it was just okay. Unfortunately, the experience wasn’t great, while some employees were nice, others came off as rude, which left a mixed impression on our first visit.

I understand your point, but I just want to clarify my experience. I wasn’t aware of the full menu options, which is why I asked the staff directly. Unfortunately, they only showed me 2 or 3 non pork options, and the way they responded wasn’t helpful, in fact, they were a bit rude. That was actually the biggest turn off for me. I was trying to be polite and open, but the attitude I received from the employees didn’t reflect the hospitality I was hoping for. I don’t have any issue with the menu itself, I respect that pork might be your specialty. But service matters too, and sadly that’s where my experience fell short. I’m just sharing my personal point of view. No need to agree with it, but I think it’s fair...
