Caffe dei Papi — Restaurant in Rome

This place will rip you off if you aren’t careful!!! Avoid it!!! I went to this place twice, and the 2nd left me never wanting to go back again. First time was ok, coffee is ok, nothing great, and I had two macchiatos at the bar. My tab was 2,40€ total, for the 2 drinks. Went back again a few days later while on a school project and had 1 capuchino, which was meh at best. The place was empty and the barista and waitress began to chat with me, I was half way done with my drink and they told me to “have a seat” I told them I was fine knowing places charge more when you sit but they insisted and said “don’t worry, it’s fine, we are not busy and talking.” When I asked for my tab I got charged 3€ and the barista had the audacity to say “oh, I’m going to give you a discount.” Would’ve made a big issue of it but it was literally 1,50€ at most that I was losing and I didn’t have the time to deal with it, so I left and won’t ever go back again. In Rome for several months and coming back for several more, so not like they ripped off a tourist, loosing out on more money than they thought by being jerks. AVOID...

I stayed in Rome for about 6 months and ate here at least once a week (probably more like 9 times a week if we also count constantly stopping by for a cappuccino or lunch) and it was the most incredible pasta and wine I had in Italy! Everyone who works there is so kind and generous and treated my friends and I like their own family. ♥️ I’ve never felt so at home while so far away. I truly could not have had the same amazing experience in Rome if I had never been to Cafe Dei Papi. The waitress seems to rush you to order as soon as you are seated. Once ordered, a simple coffee and croissant will take anywhere from 5 to 15 mins to be served.. You may even need to remind them about food. For a simple coffee, this is a good stop. Don't order food unless you have time to kill.

They do not operate with a ticket system. So the other staff have nothing but the verbal request to put together what you have ordered.

When going to pay, they have no idea what you ordered. They have to request the waitress to confirm the order.
