A Hidden Gem Near the Vatican – A Must-Visit in Rome!
We had the pleasure of enjoying lunch at Borgo Nuovo, just steps away from the Vatican, before our tours of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums—and we’re so glad we did! While walking past numerous other restaurants in the area, something about Borgo Nuovo caught our eye. It turned out to be the perfect choice.
From the moment we stepped inside, the service was top-notch. Despite not having a reservation and showing up as a party of 12 (8 adults and 4 kids), the staff welcomed us warmly and efficiently accommodated our group. Impressively, all of our meals were served at the same time—even with each of us ordering something different!
We sampled a variety of dishes including the fried calamari, pizzas, frutti di mare, fresh pasta, and the classic buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The adults particularly enjoyed the Aperol Spritz, which we all agreed were among the best we had in Rome, along with ice-cold beers—a refreshing treat that’s surprisingly hard to come by in Italy.
The restaurant was not only stylish and comfortable but also incredibly clean. The washrooms were spotless—a rare and very welcome surprise in the city center—and a clear sign that Borgo Nuovo takes pride in both its food and its overall customer experience.
This spot is a perfect choice for families with young kids or groups of adults looking for authentic Italian food and some of the best pizza in Rome. When we returned to Rome the following week, we chose to try a different restaurant in another part of the city and regretted not just going back to Borgo Nuovo. That’s how good it was.
Highly recommended—you won’t be...
Read moreWe ate here for a week on our school trip, and it was really okay, almost nice. The atmosphere was awesome (but that was mostly because we brought it ourselves, we were a group of 73). The service was nice, the people were nice, but when we asked for a new bottle of water we didn't always get it, even though they said the would. But the food itself was not that well, but I think it was mostly because our school just ordered cheapest thing (which is logical). The (anti-)pasta was always AMAZING, the dessert was also really AWSOME, but the main course was most times a biiitttt disappointing. But it was a very very nice experience, really recommend. (often people were outside and the food they would bring to them looked really good, so if you can choose your meal yourself I think it would really be a...
Read moreThis is a magical place close to north gate exit of the Vatican. It's just the best food I had fresh seafood. Much more to eat here than just pizza although that was excellent as well, my daughter had the pizza. We also met the most exceptional women I am convinced she is a saint in waiting. Hello Stiffania 👋 We are still thinking about her. A frequent visitor of Osteria Pizzeria and a volunteer at the Rome children's hospital she was a gem of a soul to have a drink and part of lunch with. What can I say charming place, delicious food, great prices too! And you might meet the most fascinating locals.😊 Great times after a perfect 4 hour guided Vatican tour thank you Rome it was...
