In 1612, the ancient Roman aqueduct Aqua Traiana was rebuilt by Pope Paul V and renamed Acqua Paola; the restored aqueduct provided the fountain with a much more abundant source of water. The architect Carlo Maderno, nephew of the architect Domenico Fontana, was commissioned to redesign the fountain. He built a new octagonal base for the fountain, on which he built a large, irregular basin, decorated with steps and small columns to hold the water. He retained the large lower stone vase of the old fountain and decorated the plinth above it with four stone scrolls. He removed the smaller upper vase and replaced it with an inverted vase or mushroom-like cap, covered with stone scales. When the water gushed from the top, it overflowed the upper vase, its flow interrupted and made to sparkle by the stone scales. In addition, he removed the coats of arms of the three previous popes and replaced them with plaques commemorating his patron, Pope Paul V.

St. Peter’s Square is truly breathtaking. The scale of the architecture and the grandeur of the surrounding buildings are mesmerizing. I visited in late October, just as peak season was winding down, yet the square was still packed with visitors from around the world. The line to enter St. Peter’s Basilica was incredibly long, taking us around two hours to get in, but every moment was worth it. The atmosphere was reverent and awe-inspiring, and the historical significance made it feel surreal. This is a place everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

This is one of the two 17th-century fountains that flank the Vatican Obelisk in the middle of Piazza San Pietro. The northern fountain was built by Carlo Maderno while the southern fountain is the work of G.L. Bernini. The fountains have a similar appearance both with a mushroom like cap spouting water upward and falling into a middle basin before spilling into the octagonal shaped, ground-level basin. They are nice fountains but can be quickly overlooked while admiring scale and colossal structures around the square.

During our visit of eternal brilliant city Rome, incomparable Vatican City, Vatican Museums, we saw those two beautiful and unique fountains at Piazza. And the right one is outstanding Maderno Fountain in that Piazza San Pietro. It's one of the most beautiful fountains in the city, and it's easy to see why. It was commissioned by Pope Paul V in 1612 and was completed by Carlo Maderno in 1614. It's made up of a central basin with two large sculptures of river gods, one representing the Tiber and the other representing the Nile. The sculptures are surrounded by cascading water, and they're topped by a central obelisk. The Maderno Fountain is a truly must-see for any visitor to Rome in my opinion. We were particularly impressed by the way the fountain reflects the beauty of the surrounding architecture, including St. Peter's Basilica. It's a truly magical place to spend some time, and we highly...
