Jerry Thomas Speakeasy — Restaurant in Rome

One of the worst experiences of my entire life. Extremely obnoxious, rude and racist staff. We arrived at this bar and were told that there was only a shared table available for 75 minutes as we did not have a reservation, we told them that was great and proceeded inside. When we entered we asked to be seated on the sofa as the small square stools looked uncomfortable, we were told by the waitress that the table was reserved twenty minutes from then, I asked if we could still sit there and that we would move when the other party arrived, she said no because they had to ‘clean and prepare the space’. We sat next to two groups, one of whom left and we quickly made friends with the other. We ordered some drinks and continued to have a decent time. The same waitress then came to us and told us that we would have to move because the table we were already seated at was reserved for a party of 8. I told her that was not fair and that we were not willing to move. She then responded and said ‘you have to move’ - NO PLEASE, NO THANK YOU, NO SIR and NO RESPECT. I advised her that we were not going to move that she was welcome to seat 3 more people at the table so that the bar didn’t lose any revenue. She said that she could not do that again and that we would have to move, with her tone getting increasingly condescending. The other group we had made friends with asked her if we could be seated together again at a table for 5 and she replied no. I then suggested that she split the incoming group of 8 and seat three with us and five at the other location. She replied that because we did not have a reservation that we would have to move. Bear in mind this is all after we had already been seated, ordered and delivered our drinks and were presumably respected and paying patrons of this inherently and undeniably racist establishment. At this point her mannerisms and tone was extremely judgemental and inappropriate. It triggered something in me and greatly upset me to the point that I poured my drink on the table and got up to leave the poorly managed speakeasy. By this time, the manager came over and said that it was a misunderstanding and tried to gaslight me into believing that it was us that had requested a separate table - even though we did not and we were clearly happily seated, comfortable and having a good time. Our first night out in Italy as a couple we decided to visit this “cocktail bar” as it is listed on Google. We arrived outside of the bar just to see a closed door and people waiting in the rain to get in. A hostess opened the door some minutes later asking if anyone had a reservation so he could get in which is ok. We didn’t have a reservation so we decided to wait as we were told by the hostess.. The rain got stronger and more people came outside to wait. After a few more minutes the hostess started getting groups of people inside that didn’t have reservations but were there after we did. When she came out for the third time asking for a couple that just arrived if they want to get in, we asked her why is she ignoring us and her response was “i only have a place for two people standing at the bar”. We said that we were cool with that and that she should ask us first since we were the ones waiting the longer and she said ok then you can come in.

She then proceeded to ask us for a password since the place is members only 😂. When we replied that we didn’t know the password or that the place is “members only” she prompted us to a site with some riddles that if we solved them we would know the pass to get in. Ofcourse while we were trying to figure out what’s going on standing in the rain she let more people get in.. After 25’ in the rain and the unprofessional behavior of the hostess we just left.

First of all, you are not a members only bar you’re pretending to be one. Figuring out a puzzle in a site doesn’t make you a member. As a bar owner i could write a whole book on how wrong and fake your treatment of potential customers is but i know that it would hit on deaf ears cause supposedly your bar is a success. Came here on recommendation from the waiter at dinner our last night in Rome. Don't be alarmed that its a normal looking door in a random looking alley. Everything screams residential street. Keep going!

We felt very unprepared, didnt have a reservation and didnt know to take the quiz to figure out the password. We showed up, rang the bell and played dumb haha!

Reservations are typically only 90 minutes anyways, so they said we could squeeze in between other reservations. Keep in mind this was during July, peak Summer before midnight. So be sure to go even if you dont have a reservation. They will most likely squeeze you in.

So now for the meat and potatoes...

Pros -overall vibe is very swanky. Proper American speakeasy. Leather furniture, vintage news articles, art, and collectibles. -cocktails are impeccably crafted. Well balanced and tasty. I had the aviatior. It was one of the more affordable drinks (range 15-25 euro). It was light and citrusy. Great on a hot night. -intimimate setting. Great for romance or a relaxed vibe

Cons -not good for bigger groups and time limit -expensive drinks -limited drinks menu (but you could circumvent by going to bar and telling them what you like for something custom) -SMOKING is very much still en vogue here. So be prepared the small setting is gonna be cloudy have to be a member. So if you're not, thats an unexpected 5 euro/person. Good for a year
