Dining at Le Tavernelle was an unforgettable experience that perfectly captured the warmth, flavor, and charm of Roman hospitality. Tucked away just a short stroll from the Colosseum, this family-run trattoria blends traditional Italian cuisine with genuine warmth and attentive service.
From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted like old friends. The staff are not only welcoming, but they genuinely care about your experience – offering recommendations with passion and making sure you feel at home throughout the meal.
The food? Absolutely divine. We started with classic antipasti – the bruschetta al pomodoro was fresh and bursting with flavor. But the real highlight was the Cacio e Pepe with black truffle – a rich, velvety, and perfectly balanced dish that elevated a Roman classic to something truly special. The black truffle added a luxurious depth that made every bite a delight. We also enjoyed the grilled sea bass, which was incredibly fresh, perfectly seasoned, and cooked to flaky perfection – light yet full of flavor.
Every dish was made with top-quality ingredients and clearly crafted with care and pride. The wine list was thoughtfully selected, and even the house wine paired beautifully with our meal.
What truly sets Le Tavernelle apart is its soul. It’s not just about food – it’s about the experience. The cozy atmosphere, the laughter of locals, and the stories shared across tables make it feel more like dining with family than in a restaurant.
If you’re in Rome and looking for an authentic, delicious, and heartwarming meal, Le Tavernelle is an absolute must. We left with full stomachs, happy hearts, and every intention of returning....
Read moreI would highly recommend making reservations at this restaurant. I was only able to get a 9:30pm reservation with 2 days notice and had to put down my credit card details for a hefty penalty in case I cancelled. Based on my lone visit, it seems that a good portion of the clientele was Italian-speaking with some tourists sprinkled in. This restaurant is clearly popular with a long track record based on the numerous pictures of celebrities dining here and the reservation cancellation penalty. Every dish we had was excellent. With that being said, the standouts were the cacio e pepe which was probably the least salty of all the Roman pastas we ate in Rome. I generally found all of the big 4 Roman pastas at various restaurants to be very salty, but this version was just right in terms of salt levels. They were also nice enough to split the portion into 2 since we were sharing. The frying technique and batter on the mixed fried starter was delicate, light, airy, and not greasy. The side of sweet and sour eggplant was also very good! It reminded me of a Sri Lankan eggplant/brinjal moju dish. The flavor profile is sooo different from traditional Italian flavors which makes me wonder if a Sri Lankan chef brought the recipe to this restaurant. In general, the cooking technique and flavors were all a cut above the other restaurants we ate at while in Rome. This is a must-visit if you're in the Monti neighborhood. Just remember...

La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali is an absolute must-visit when in Rome. Tucked just slightly off the beaten track near the Colosseum, this charming restaurant delivers an unforgettable dining experience that’s well worth the effort of securing a reservation (which you’ll need to do at least three weeks in advance for dinner, I was lucky to snag a lunch slot).
This was my second visit, my first being two years ago with my partner — and I’m thrilled to say the standard remains just as high. This time, I came with my father and one other, and the experience was just as exceptional.
The consistency and quality of the food is second to none. The menu, including its specials, is clearly curated with care and seasonal awareness. My pasta starter was a highlight — the texture and sauce were executed to perfection. Every plate that came out of the kitchen was beautifully balanced and deeply satisfying.
Service was superb. Attentive without being intrusive, the staff made sure our every need was met. Their knowledge of the menu and recommendations added to the sense that you’re being looked after by people who genuinely care.
In terms of value for money, La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali delivers in spades. Whether for lunch or dinner, it’s a must-see destination for anyone who appreciates authentic Roman cuisine done exceptionally well.
Tip: Book early. It’s popular...
