I am full in my hotel bed after one of the best restaurant experiences of my life. We stumbled in late, a group of 8 tourists, exhausted from an all day bus tour, and just trying to feed everyone with the nearest option, even though it was my cousin's 21st birthday. SUD made this desperation stop a night We will never forget. From the delicious food (get appetizers! The prosciutto and foccacia were out of this world, and our main courses were delicious, especially the pasta with mussels and peccorino), to the excellent wine suggestions, to the cocktails (best daiquiri ive ever had, tasted like a fresh lemon tree smells on the breeze) we were already having a great time. Then dessert menus went around, and sharing spoons. We asked about Amaro and Michaele's eyes lit up. Boy, I hope I'm getting his name right, because as the server who truly made this night one of the greatest dining experiences we've ever had, he deserves the honors, but after a flight of Amaro and amaro-adjacent suggestions, it's all a bit fuzzy. He brought us a round of italian liquors that we might like if we like Amaro, and the perfect prosecco, and a cherry tart with a birthday candle. He regaled us with his quick-witted banter and every recommendation was perfect. On the way out, he sent us off with a parting birthday and new years well wish and a kind word as we waited for our taxi. SUD could not have been a happier accident this night. If you visit Roma, you...
Read moreThis evening’s meal - second of two nights of Roman food - took place at SUD. Michele, the genteel host, explained the concept of “sud” in a way that made conceptual and culinary sense to me and my partner.
Our meal choices began with a shared first course of gnocchi with clams. The gnocchi were perfectly formed, light, and had a wonderful forward potato flavor that made me happy. We moved on to two beef courses (one each), and while my shredded beef with greens was tasty, the rosemary beef was superb. The cut was nicely marbled and grilled with care, leaving it juicy and tender to the knife (great flatware, by the way).
We finished our meal with a Sicilian cannoli and a Calabrian tartufo. I liked how the cream filling of the cannoli was not overly sweet and felt fresh. The tartufo was a filled mold of pistachio ice cream dusted with cocoa powder and a concise 3-cm circle of crushed pistachio nuts to remind us of what we were eating. A wonderful presentation.
Sorry to have no photos to share. The food speaks for itself and the restaurant’s atmosphere - simple, modern, and tastefully lit - contributes to a sense of “relax” and was welcome break from a frenetic summer’s...
Read moreWe had the best meal in Rome here. We chanced upon it on our first day in Rome because it was close to our lodging and knew we made the right choice when it was full of locals and some tourists. We ordered the bruschetta, seafood pasta, seafood paella, carbonara (best one we had in Rome), and rosemary steak, and everything was great. For dessert, we had tiramisu and cannoli-they were delicious and not overly sweet. Food was so good that we returned on our last night in Rome.
On top of that, the staff was so warm and understanding with our toddler. We appreciated that they had a high chair for our little one. Service was great overall.
The ambiance was great with tasteful decoration that invites patrons to relax over a bottle of wine after a long day at work (or in our case, a long day of sightseeing).
We are so grateful for the staff’s hospitality and delicious meal! This is the kind of place that I hope doesn’t get overly popular so as not to lose its charm, but hope for its continued success because...
