This restaurant is in a great location in the Borgi next to the Vatican on a beautiful street. I'm Portuguese and me and my partner, who I met in Portugal and is Italian but lives in Rome now, wanted to try Portuguese here before he moves away again. It is definitely Portuguese, and I deeply respect them for offering Portuguese cuisine in Rome, which is not an international city regarding food at all, and even though food was good, I can't say it was amazing. I thought the starters were a bit dry and my bacalhau à Braga wasn't exactly like how you find in Portugal. The bacalhau com natas was good though, even though it had a strange garnish of tomatoes on top. Presentation of the chourico assado was not the typical way with fire underneath and for the prices I would expect more from the service (to have someone taste the wine before leaving it at the table for example). The Portuguese chef however did offer us some delicious milfolhas and Portuguese liqueurs at the end, so overall I think the quality could have been a little better but it is a nice place to try Portuguese food if you want it and you live in Rome.

This was the BEST restaurant we experienced in Rome. We had plans to tour the Vatican but wanted to grab a nice lunch before. We walked around and this establishment caught our eye. Their menu looked great and they had so many people dining, even groups of roman priests! We sat outside and it was a gorgeous beautiful day. It's located in a cute area with lots of wonderful shops and people watching available. We ordered and shared the following: Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare (with clams, mussels, shrimps) - The pasta was perfectly al dente. The seafood was fresh and delicious. Generous portion. Pizza Capricciosa (tomato, mozzarella, ham, mushrooms, egg) - Nice and thin. Great combination of flavors. EVERYTHING was amazing! Service was good. They were very busy for lunch so it did take some time to get our check after we asked for it. We would have come back again the next day if we had more time in Rome. Definitely a favorite of ours!

The food was great at this restaurant! We had lasagna and pizza, and Aperol spritz for drinks. The pizza was very good and Roma style pizza. The lasagna was very delicious; you could taste the good quality of cheese, great layers of pasta, and excellent seasoning. The atmosphere is very good. We sat outdoor and they had live music playing. The service was excellent too! The price was affordable.

Good food, attentive service. The primi (pasta dishes) were good, with the amatriciana being especially good. Make sure to skip one main meal, or you won't have space to tuck in the secondi (meat or fish dish).

If you forget to skip a meal or two, and make the terrible mistake of ordering only the appetizer and the primi but not the secondi, your punishment will be to experience the subdued wrath/irritation of the waiter who will make sure to denigrate you at least mildly for having the audacity to order a primi without the secondi, as other reviewers have noted. This happened to our group of 5, for which I knocked off one star.

To prevent this from happening at Tre Pupazzi, stare down your waiter (they all behave similarly) and ask him sarcastically if he's ok with you ordering only a primi and not a secondi. Keep repeating your question, without easing up on the intimidating stare, until he succumbs. And voila, you can then enjoy your meal.

Before you do this, like in any restaurant in Italy, PLEASE make sure to be 100% sure of what you want to order BEFORE giving your order/calling the waiter. If you either 1) keep the waiter waiting while he's there taking your order, and/or 2) if you change your mind while he's standing there, be prepared to be exposed to the waiter's uncultured and uneducated side.

Expecting what cannot be offered is foolishness on the part of the wise, and adds fuel to the fool's folly. Resist the temptation, and you'll have an enjoyable experience not only at Tre Pupazzi but at any restaurant (even those serving non-Italian cuisine) in Europe....

I had been here before and had a lovely meal so I had no objections when friends suggested we return. The atmosphere is nice and it is not too busy despite its location close to the Vatican. Any restaurant in that area proposed by Romans must be good. Alas, this was not the case. It has gotten quite expensive for the quality of the food.

I had a Caprese salad which underwhelmed. Presented like a multi-level hamburger, the beef tomato was sliced across multiple times and then slices of mozzarella di bufala were placed between the tomato slices and a stick passed through the whole thing to keep it together presenting the appearance of a sliced whole tomato. A cherry tomato was placed on top with a single basil leaf. The whole plate was drizzled with oil.

Now call me old-fashioned but a Caprese salad with only one basil leaf is underwhelming to say the least. The flavour of the basil is so important. The tomato itself was tasteless and the mozzarella did not taste like it was "di bufala". The olive oil was also quite bland so that mopping up the leftovers with some bread did not add anything, but I did it anyway because the portion was so small. I could have made a better salad myself in any country. And saved money from the €12 this one cost.

For dessert, I had a lemon sorbet which was very nice, recovering a star. After dinner, I asked my partner if she had enjoyed her dinner and she said it was only...
