Good food, attentive service. The primi (pasta dishes) were good, with the amatriciana being especially good. Make sure to skip one main meal, or you won't have space to tuck in the secondi (meat or fish dish).
If you forget to skip a meal or two, and make the terrible mistake of ordering only the appetizer and the primi but not the secondi, your punishment will be to experience the subdued wrath/irritation of the waiter who will make sure to denigrate you at least mildly for having the audacity to order a primi without the secondi, as other reviewers have noted. This happened to our group of 5, for which I knocked off one star.
To prevent this from happening at Tre Pupazzi, stare down your waiter (they all behave similarly) and ask him sarcastically if he's ok with you ordering only a primi and not a secondi. Keep repeating your question, without easing up on the intimidating stare, until he succumbs. And voila, you can then enjoy your meal.
Before you do this, like in any restaurant in Italy, PLEASE make sure to be 100% sure of what you want to order BEFORE giving your order/calling the waiter. If you either 1) keep the waiter waiting while he's there taking your order, and/or 2) if you change your mind while he's standing there, be prepared to be exposed to the waiter's uncultured and uneducated side.
Expecting what cannot be offered is foolishness on the part of the wise, and adds fuel to the fool's folly. Resist the temptation, and you'll have an enjoyable experience not only at Tre Pupazzi but at any restaurant (even those serving non-Italian cuisine) in Europe....
Read moreI had been here before and had a lovely meal so I had no objections when friends suggested we return. The atmosphere is nice and it is not too busy despite its location close to the Vatican. Any restaurant in that area proposed by Romans must be good. Alas, this was not the case. It has gotten quite expensive for the quality of the food.
I had a Caprese salad which underwhelmed. Presented like a multi-level hamburger, the beef tomato was sliced across multiple times and then slices of mozzarella di bufala were placed between the tomato slices and a stick passed through the whole thing to keep it together presenting the appearance of a sliced whole tomato. A cherry tomato was placed on top with a single basil leaf. The whole plate was drizzled with oil.
Now call me old-fashioned but a Caprese salad with only one basil leaf is underwhelming to say the least. The flavour of the basil is so important. The tomato itself was tasteless and the mozzarella did not taste like it was "di bufala". The olive oil was also quite bland so that mopping up the leftovers with some bread did not add anything, but I did it anyway because the portion was so small. I could have made a better salad myself in any country. And saved money from the €12 this one cost.
For dessert, I had a lemon sorbet which was very nice, recovering a star. After dinner, I asked my partner if she had enjoyed her dinner and she said it was only...
