Finally got a chance to stop by this place as I've been looking for a nice, centrally located spot near the river to take friends and family when they are in town!
Sadly, La Drogheria is not that place. Don't do it, unless you want to be treated like a second class citizen, particularly if you speak limited Italian. There are better places with kinder staff (and better prices for as good drinks).
A friend and I sat down and were waiting for our third party member to join us. We ordered two cocktails. I was asked if I wanted aperitivo as well, which I did, but my friend was not asked. When our drinks, food for two, and bill for two cocktails and two rounds of aperitivo came we realized that the waitress hadn't asked my friend if she wanted aperitivo as well and we hadn't explicitly stated she didn't want it so-- oh well. We paid the bill and didn't say anything. Stuff happens. Our language skills aren't perfect yet, so we just paid for it and moved on.
Our third friend joined and ordered her cocktail from a different waitress, who came back a bit later and confirmed-- solo cocktail? We said yes, only the cocktail. After a little bit the hostess came out and we thought asked if everything was okay-- we don't speak perfect Italian so it was a little confusing as she spoke very quickly. The cocktail came out, and the bill, which was again paid promptly.
A little bit later a third waitress came out with a platter of additional aperitivo for us, and we politely said thanks but no, that's not ours, we didn't order it and don't want it. We go back to our chit chat.
A few minutes later the hostess came out and started full on yelling at us, very upset and insisting that I had ordered the aperitivo for my friend! I was confused and said no, I didn't, and my friends were also quite confused. Rather than speak with us calmly or try to get to the bottom of what was obviously a simple misunderstanding and language mishap, the hostess kept being aggressive and insisting that she was right and we were wrong and put the platter on the table.
I honestly have rarely seen someone escalate to such anger over something so small that we weren't even complaining about: we just truly didn't want the food so it seemed wasteful to take it. At this point we looked at the receipt for the third drink and realized that yes, my friend been charged for a third aperitivo that she didn't want but we had already paid for everything (and we weren't asking for a bill correction, we just didn't want to waste a bunch of food we couldn't eat).
The part that is the most frustrating is that we were all just genuinely confused and the hostess was incredibly rude and aggressive right away. At no point in any of this did we ask for our money back or complain at all, even when we realized all of the errors (including the second apertivo that the waitress just assumed and was definitely not ordered). Miscommunications happen, it's a four euro platter, it really isn't a big deal. But we especially didn't want to take third platter as even two was far more than we could eat and would be wasted-- one friend is gluten intolerant and the other friend is a vegetarian, so most of the food was not even anything they could eat! This, incidentally, is also how I know that we wouldn't have ordered three rounds of aperitivo... two of us couldn't even eat most of the food they serve. And again, we were fine paying for it and simply accepting that there was a miscommunication, but the attitude of the hostess was really upsetting.
The simple fact that we were treated with such rudeness even though we did nothing more than be a little confused and not want extra food that we couldn't eat was incredibly disheartening and disappointing.
La Drogheria is not the vibe you want for a fun, chill aperitivo with friends. Which is a shame because their comic book menu was...
Read moreMajority of the score for this place is based on the location. It's a good space that's really close to the river, especially on a Sunday afternoon (when there's not really much open). However, the food is pretty average; I got pancakes for dessert, and they were pretty depressing (they weren't fluffy at all; they were super dense).
The prices aren't very good, either, and the service leaves a bit to be desired. It took us a while to get someone's attention because someone would walk outside and somehow glance over our waving arms. There's better deals/food elsewhere. But the...
