Disappointing Experience at RISTORANTE AL VAGON

My recent visit to RISTORANTE AL VAGON left me utterly disappointed and frustrated. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that the service would be subpar. Not only were the waiters extremely rude, but we were also passed around from waiter to waiter ultimately being attended to by three different waiters throughout the evening.

To make matters worse, the quality of the alcoholic drinks served was subpar. It was evident that little care went into preparing them, and they tasted like bottom-shelf substitutes.

Adding insult to injury, we were slapped with a hefty service charge of 4€ per person (I understand service charges are normal here) despite the dismal service we received. As if that wasn't enough, we were then pressured to provide an additional tip, despite our dissatisfaction.

When we dared to express our dissatisfaction upon leaving, we were met with major attitude from the staff. The waiter became increasingly aggressive as we made our way out, leaving a sour taste in our mouths. He even went as far to state very loudly as he walked away “the bill was only 54 euro”.

Comparing this experience to a previous visit to another restaurant earlier in the evening only highlighted the vast difference in quality and service. Needless to say, I would not recommend RISTORANTE AL VAGON to anyone. Save yourself the trouble and...

The photos attached to this should really tell it all. The food was absolutely terrible. Who takes octopus, cuts off all the tentacles and then steams it and throws some lettuce around it? Please take a look at that picture with what they think is actually octopus. The muscles, they didn’t even open on about 8 to 10 of them that were in the pot. I don’t know why it was even served. I will let the pictures do the rest of the talking, but when I tell you, there was absolutely no flavor in any of the pasta dishes, and then they tried to put Parmesan cheese that looked like it came out of a Kraft 4C bottle onto it to make it better. Once the appetizers were sent back the owner tried to tell us that everything was fresh, and she realizes there area has a lot of tourists but it’s a family business and her mother is back there cooking, who also came out, which basically means she was trying to convince us of something that wasn’t actually there. I wanted to say to her that not everyone’s mother is a good cook. I didn’t even complain about the appetizers, I just asked them to take it back and bring me the next course . If I could give this place zero stars I would. The service from the waiter was actually very good and he was very kind and the atmosphere is beautiful. But no one pays for atmosphere you pay for food, so I basically paid €140 for a table by a smelly canal and a waiter...

Very dissapointed to say the least. The waiter kept saying we was coming but we waited around 30 minutes before he finally came. We ordered water that was never served to us. He brought us bread without any oil or butter and was irritated when we asked for some especially because we did not order a bottle of wine. Unfortunately the bread tasted like it had been cut hours before, the balsamic vinegar was highly acidic. Once he took our order the food arrived in less than 10 minutes. I had the roasted chicken and I was told it came with a side of potatoes but to my surprise it was more like half a boiled potatoes. The chicken had a good taste but I was definitely still hungry afterwards. My friends had the Bolognese and the pasta was dissapointing. They had been thrown in the plate and barely had sauce. It took us less time to eat then we had waited. Be careful when you go there because they will charge you for coperto (table cuttlery) your bill will always be higher than you expect it. The portions were small, the prices high, the service terrible which made us order the less possible so that we could just pay and leave asap. Would not go back, there is...

The location and the food deserve 4.5/5 stars. We were a party of 4 that showed up without reservation but we were accommodated. The food was very good, we had lasagna, seafood risotto and seafood pasta. Tiramisu desert was exceptional. One of the servers was very rude. After being seated for only 3 minutes, he came and asked if we were ready to order. We politely asked for more time; this is where he was visibly annoyed and turned his back on us while expressing his frustration. We considered leaving the restaurant at that point. He did not come again at our table for the entire evening (we actually saw him leaving earlier while we were still eating). We had other 3 waiters that served us and they were all professional. The coperto fee is on the high side (4 euro per person). Upon receiving the bill, the server politely told us (once) that the tips are not included in the bill but they are optional. I will not go back again because of the possibility to be served again by the server who had an anger outburst. The food was good but I had equally good or better food in Venice for a lower price and got better service and atmosphere.

I spent most of my lunches and dinners in Venice at Al Vagon, a delightful restaurant serving the best of Venetian seafood, curated by the wonderful family of Giovanna, Simone, and their mother, Celsa. This charming venue, steered by its third-generation owners, continues to uphold a remarkable standard of culinary excellence. The magic in their dishes comes from more than just the fresh, locally-sourced ingredients; it's the loving preparation by local chefs and the personal touches from Mamma Celsa that truly set them apart. This family’s passion for quality, ensures that every meal is not only delicious, and authentic, but also imbued with the rich, culinary traditions of Venice. If you're looking for an authentic dining experience in Venice where the food is as amazing as the service, make sure to visit Al Vagon. Here, every plate tells a story of heritage and perfection, lovingly passed down through generations. Remember to book outside under the arches overlooking the canal. It’s private and you see gondolas pass by while sipping on your aperitivo.
