Kura House is a gift shop, kitchen/café, and gallery near Honcho Street in Fujiyoshida dedicated to town revitalization through hosting local artists, showcasing Fujiyoshida textiles, and building connections through special events. “Kura” means store-house, and the owners have converted two old fashioned kura into a store and gallery space. The original owners squeezed a house between the two massive kura, which is now where the kitchen and café is located.
The shop, called Kinuya Store, is managed by Robert Hsu, a Taiwanese graphic designer and photographer. Robert curates a selection of Fuji area textiles, and invites pottery artists from around Japan to sell their wares. Beautiful high quality scarves, towels, shirts, dresses, and umbrellas are for sale, all woven nearby in Fujiyoshida’s historic textile factories. Currently dishes, tea cups, and coffee mugs are displayed by artists from Tokyo and Kyoto.
Kura Kitchen is a cozy Japanese style space found further inside the compound. Kura Kitchen offers seasonal changing specialties during lunch time, such as Korean food in December, and onigiri using fresh local ingredients. The café also offers specialty teas, coffees, cola, and beer.
The Kura House gallery showcases artists from around Japan and hosts special events such as film screenings and live music. Visit their Instagram page for more information. @kinuyashoten and @kurahouse_fujiyoshida
