(Summary) If you suffer from an allergy, have dietary restrictions, are an English or Japanese-speaking patron, and want a cafe with good food and lots of seating in a cozy environment, the kind CAFE will be a 5/5 experience for you. There is also a shop attached to the CAFE that is open even when the shop is "temporarily closed". You can get oats, granola, coffee, tea, edible souvenirs, and lots more. It's a very cute shop and worth a visit, even for just a quaint photo or chat with the owners. The cost of the CAFE can be higher than non-dietary accommodating places, but we still felt it was fair and mildly cheaper than many other shops we visited on our month-long trip.
If you're heading up the hill, the kind CAFE is located down a quaint little alley past the Double Tree Hotel. The kind CAFE caters passionately to those with allergies, such as gluten-free people. My wife suffers from this allergy, but I do not, so this review will be mainly from that perspective.
We're both in overworked artists from the United States and immensely enjoyed coming here several mornings. The environment is spacious while remaining cozy, with a warm bright atmosphere. We returned three times during our stay in Kyoto. The kind CAFE catered to both of us, allowing my wife to have entirely gluten-free dishes with a spread of choices and me to have dishes with traditional bread and dairy if I wished. They also cater to vegan options and have a slew of little secrets they happily share with you on how they bring some of the traditional flavors to their substitutes such as a pink sulfur salt on their vegan eggs to enhance the flavor (surprisingly very effective). Many restaurants in Japan can be reluctant to tell you what is in their gluten-free dishes without taking a class, but we found the staff open and passionate about discussing this topic. You'll also have an extensive list of teas, coffees, and juices, along with rotating food options.
If you're someone who wishes to be left alone, the staff will also leave you to your thoughts and let you get on with your morning in peace. If you're someone who likes to chat, the two owners who helped us are willing and excited to hear about your trip, learn more about you, share travel locations around town, and deliver on that high level of service many of us hear about when traveling to Japan. English and Japanese menus were available, and the staff spoke English with us, helped us with travel and language questions, and were fun and friendly to meet with during our trip. My only complaint was I wished they were open earlier so we could have stopped by more often.
Thanks for the hospitality. Your friends over at Pixar and...
Read moreIf I could give 10 stars, I would. This charming restaurant and bulk shop is run by an endearing mother/daughter team, and we cannot stop smiling after breakfast just now. I had the avocado/sauerkraut toast set, which was the perfect amount of food, and my partner had the scrambled tofu/"egg" set. We were blown away by the flavor of the scrambled tofu, which tasted even better than eggs! Our mouths were agape at how tasty they were. My partner is still talking about it, saying that eggs should try to taste like that tofu, instead of the other way around.
Outside of the toasts, each accompanying dish had its own outstanding flavor. The quinoa salad had a slightly acidic dressing that complimented the veggies in it, and the lentil soup had a slight sweetness from sweet potato, and it felt very hearty. The chai puddings comically came in shot glasses, and were both very flavorful with the fruit, without needing added sugar. We were so delighted to not only have a flavorful vegan breakfast, but probably the healthiest one of our entire trip.
Additionally, the matcha latte with soy milk was one of the best I have had in Japan. My partner tried the amazake latte, which is a fermented rice drink . They ferment the rice on the premises, and it has a lovely smooth texture, as nd slight sweetness to it. Definitely...
Read moreThis was one the best breakfasts in Kyoto - if you’re Vegan or Gluten Free, I can’t promise it will change your life for better, but it will certainly make your day better. My wife and I walked into an unassuming bulk store that has a restaurant attached and a thoughtful shop in the back - every aspect is something we would purchase. It was rather unbelievable - and then there was breakfast. We have had almost the entire menu over our visits - everything incredibly tasty. There are no dietary limitations here.
Avocado toast with plant egg added was a nice modification, but the whole menu is terrific. Smoothies 10/10 no notes.
The food? Lights out delicious. The conversation? Enlightening and engaging. The bulk store? Would buy everything groceries/nuts/fruits there. The selection of shop items? Inspired, unique and endearing. The food is organic and bulk, but the shop items all felt hand made and with their own story to tell.
The restaurant, the shop, and the bull store are run by a mother and daughters, the building was once a printing press run a hundred years ago by family elders. That tactile, hand-made curated care is still present in every aspect.
We look forward to taking a kintsugi class with one of the daughters, as well as many more breakfasts at [the kind]. Enjoy for yourself with a high...
