Tasty ramen joint underneath Kyoto station on the east side of Porta which is a sprawling underground mall area. You do not need a train ticket to get in. Popular with travelers. There was a line of maybe 15 people waiting to get in, but it went very fast, in less than 10 minutes we were sitting. Staff is very nice and decent English. They have English menu along the wall and you order before you are seated when you reach the front of the line. As it is under the train station most customers have luggage and there is an area to leave your suitcase as you walk in. Baskets for bags underneath your table. There are spacious booths for larger groups but most people are given a seat at a bar counter with each seat separated with a plastic shield. If you are in a group they will remove the shields between your friends.
Food came quickly and looked very good. I was impressed at the size of the bowl for the price. It is quite a large and hearty meal and was only 1k yen. Very well seasoned and flavorful, with marinated egg and an ample serving of char siu pork. Way more pork in there than I usually see in a US ramen place. I got the spicy one and it was on the mild side. I recommend the miso broth.
Great addition was free pitcher of iced tea at every table. So refreshing, ice cold and delicious. Was very nice on a humid day with a hot bowl of ramen. Highly recommended for a quick lunch or dinner before you hop on...

For those seeking plant-based options, Ippudo Shijo Karasuma offers a vegan ramen. However, it's advisable to visit early, as this option can sell out before closing time.
In addition to ramen, the gyoza (fried pork dumplings) at Ippudo have received commendations for their taste and quality.

Read moreCame here from kyoto station to eat lunch, heard that ippudo was one of the best ramen chains in Japan and decided to take a shot right here. Since i prefer to eat more richer and strongly seasoned ramen, I went ahead with the spicy karaka ramen while my family members ordered the Akamaru. Was utterly disappointed with the spicy ramen as the sesame bomb had overpowered the original broth and the ramen was really really spicy! Not sure how the locals enjoyed this bowl of spicy ramen 😕, and it was also the most oily AND inedible bowl of ramen I had eaten in my life. Honestly ignoring the spice, the broth already lacked flavour and depth in the way other ramen shops has clearly demonstrated and I would call it a "disaster" of a bowl, truly an atrocity of ramen. The Akamaru also was really just a mediocre, lacklustre bowl of ramen. Overall, definitely would not patronise this place again, as other ramen chains such as ICHIRAN are way better choices, and the unexpected spice in the karaka had scarred me for life. Out of 5 stars, would give a negative number and DO NOT enter this shop expecting the...
