Kurama - ASTY Kyoto — Restaurant in Kyoto

Set meals, presenting the best of Kyoto. It's in the 'Asty' restaurant row at Kyoto station - one of a whole bunch of small restaurants, all serving (as usual) excellent food at reasonable prices - and yes, this is what makes Train Station Dining in Japan so exceptional. This particular place is all about Kyoto specialities, but not done Kaiseki style - you get a little set menu, with rice, a couple of sides, and some dashi for the rice. It's all excellent stuff - it's hard to go wrong (though, if you're not careful, you might end up w/ twice the amount of food that you can consume!)

This is a great place for good honest food. ASTY enjoys excellent tourist traffic but this restaurant manages the queue well and gets food out promptly. I had a Ebi furai Ohitsu rice set. Mixing the half-cooked fried egg into the rice and adding the soup stock into the rice makes a satiating bowl of delight. The ebi furai was fresh and chewy. So was the bowl of yasai which came with the set. When wife was coughing with an irritated throat, one of the considerate staff brought her a glass of water with the kind words, " daijoubu desuka?". Had a lovely dinner at this restaurant conveniently located at the train station. Food looked fabulous and the line up although long, moved very efficiently! Staff were very friendly and attentive and provided great service and overall it was a fabulous dining experience.
