Moritaya — Restaurant in Kyoto

Well let's start with the food. The food was well. A little too much salt. But nothing special after we were recommended to try our first shabu shabu here. First there were some uncertainties, as one of our group didn't want shabu shabu but something else from the card. The waitresses told us that we should all have shabu shabu. But then it was possible after all.

During the whole stay, one of the waitresses was kind of unfriendly. Don't understand ne wrong, we were well experienced with Japan and eating In Japan's restaurants. I myself are employed in the customer service, and I known that everybody has got a bad day. But at this price level you have got to have a certain professionalism and friendlyness. We did not feel comfortable as the waitresses was not very kind and made a lot of fake laughs. I hope that this was not because we were tourists as up to now I only had good experienced as tourists in Japan.

My husband and I arrived at 8:30pm. 90mins before the place closes. The waitress came out ready to greet us in, but the front desk guy insisted that they cannot take us in. He kept saying it was “difficult”. We offered to wait for a table he refused and kept saying it’s “difficult”. The waitress was waiting on the side this whole time. He started finding excuses like how we didn’t have a reservation when there’s no reservation required. Moritaya offers everything fair price. It’s not the best beef we have ever had but it was pretty good. Not the best service but we felt welcomed. Not the luxury type, but they had private room for us. The place is huge and kinda loses its fame so it is not crowded. But I think they still offers neat standard level of beef menu restaurant. I will definitely return to Moritaya when I return to Kyoto, or any of its chain...
