Mind-blowing experience with excellent translators, this was amazing from start to finish. We were greeted at the door and ushered into the courtyard of a 200 year old residence of a samurai where we removed our shoes and proceeded into the house. We were then assisted to don traditional samurai robes and trousers. Then, we were given a brief history of the house and samurai (in English), followed by an explanation of Zen state of mind. We were amazed by a demonstration from the sword master, accompanied by a war drum and a 3 stringed instrument, setting the scene for a different swordsman who demonstrated cutting 5 tatami rolls in the outside courtyard. Then it was our turn! Out into the front courtyard, we were given tea and handwarmers and then practised moving, then cutting with blunt swords. The instructor was very diligent, correcting each person's form in an encouraging manner, which was translated each time into English. Then, onto cutting! Two people at a time, we each practised and then cut at the soaked tatami rolls, having about 5 cuts each... using 130 year old katanas!! To end the experience, we returned to the house and practised some Zen meditation accompanied by the vibration from brass bowls. Initially, we were concerned about the price of the experience, but it was absolutely worth every yen 😁 A special thanks to the swordmaster (sorry, I've forgotten your name 🙄) and Emily for translating a difficult question from our party about sword physics 🙏❤️ It was a truly awesome experience, and I would give it 10 out of 5 stars...

We recently had the privilege of participating in the Kyoto Samurai Experience, booked via Airbnb, and it was an absolutely incredible adventure that we highly recommend.

The experience lasts about 2 hours and begins with the doors opening 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. From the moment you step into the 200+ year old house, where a real samurai once lived, you're transported back in time.

The session starts with an informative and engaging history of the samurai, delivered in English. The house itself is a remarkable piece of history, adding to the authenticity of the experience. Following this introduction, actual samurai historians and masters take over, providing translations and deeper insights into the samurai way of life.

One of the highlights of the experience is the hands-on training. We had the unique opportunity to wield a real samurai sword that is over 130 years old and use it!! The instructors were patient and knowledgeable, ensuring that everyone had a VERY safe and enjoyable time learning the basics of samurai swordsmanship.

This experience is truly a must-try for anyone visiting Kyoto. It offers a fascinating glimpse into Japan's rich history and provides an unforgettable hands-on experience. Whether you're a history buff or simply looking for something extraordinary to do, the Kyoto Samurai Experience is...

The Kyoto Samurai Experience was an absolute highlight of my trip to Japan. From the moment I stepped into the historic home, I was transported back in time. The intricate details of the traditional architecture and the serene atmosphere were simply breathtaking. The samurai demonstration was truly captivating. The skilled swordsmen showcased their martial arts with precision and grace, offering a glimpse into the ancient warrior culture. It was both thrilling and educational. The meditation session was a perfect complement to the dynamic demonstration. The tranquil setting and guided meditation allowed me to unwind and find inner peace. It was a truly transformative experience. The hosts were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Japanese culture. They shared fascinating stories about the history of the home and the samurai way of life. Their warm hospitality made me feel welcome and valued. If you're looking for an authentic and unforgettable cultural experience in Kyoto, I highly recommend the Kyoto Samurai Experience. It's a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese history...

Absolutely unforgettable! Everyone working here made such an amazing experience that me and my girlfriend will never forget! We arrived for our session at 10am, and from greeting to leaving, all the hosts were fantastic and the grounds and home were beautiful. When entering you are changed into traditional samurai dress and you can look around the home and get a history of the samurai and house. We then enjoyed an awe inspiring display of skill and control as seen in the videos attached. We then got to try ourselves and we're taught the control of the sword in the gardens, and then it was our turn to become the samurai I had always dreamed of! We had multiple attempts at slicing takami mats and I'm happy to say, I sliced those up beautifully! We got some fantastic photos back after the experience and videos during! After all that excitement, you do feel the adrenaline pumping so it was perfect to have zen meditation to end our experience, on which, we didn't want to leave! Thank you to everyone, and I highly recommend this experience to everyone!
