This might have been my favorite meal in Kyoto - and it was totally unexpected. I happened to walk by this spot and saw that it would be closed that night for dinner as they had a reservation (place only has seven seats). So I decided to go to come back and go yo the sushi spot next door. When I returned there were a few empty seats so I asked the chef I could take one. He said yes and it turns out that the other four people (the reservation) at the spot were the chef’s friends from as sailing team they are all apart of. I ate the best tempura of my life, drank sake and whiskey all night with my new friends who had me laughing for hours. Most tempura I have had has had too much flour on it — the way chef makes it here is light and delicious. Scallops, shishito peppers, shiitake mushrooms, chicken, shrimp, alll of it was incredible !!! What a great night! Don’t miss this small amazing restaurant when...
Read moreThe food was okay, service was fast but awkward. The man did not seem happy.
We ordered the gyukatsu (not pictured), which was very thin and small, and so it was overcooked for my liking. Also had a lot of sauce on top, but I do not like katsu sauce so I think it would be better to offer it on the side.
We also ordered the soft boiled egg (good), the salmon (very good), the kabocha (too small...would rather a higher price and full slice), maitake mushroom (good, and good portion), and two servings of wagyu (it was wrapped in a vegetable and had a deep almost mustardy taste - it was okay but not as expected).
If the service was more friendly, I would have given four stars. Overall, I might recommend coming here for a very small bite, but don't expect a full experience.
Also note there is a 200...
Read moreLove everything about this place. Only 6 seats at the counter. He was nice enough to let us seat 7 with 2 sharing a seat. It's just you and the chef. Taki is his name. He is awesome. He does everything. Everything is made to order. He speaks enough English to get the order right. We tried almost everything on the menu. The tempura is so light and crispy. Everything was so good but our favorites were probably the Maitake mushroom and the Kyoto pepper. The salmon sashimi was also very good as was the beef cutlet. I recommend just dipping the tempura lightly in provided salts. 3 kinds, regular, Japanese seasoned salt, and matcha salt. The tempura sauce was good (just bonita flavored) but the salt really accentuates and perfectly brings out the natural flavors of the...
