Read moreThe menu is very limited but that's the great thing about this place they know what they're good and just only serve those items. They don't try to overwhelm you with a large menu. However i do wish they have a little bit more tofu choices.
we were a party of 3 and we were put in this cut private room. You take off your shoes at the entrance and they provide slippers when going to the bathroom. The entire tatami floor is heated! it felt so nice for our feet. We were in Kyoto in February so this heated floor was amazing as it was so cold outside.
i ordered the Miyabi set which came with an appetizer (three little Kyoto style dishes), cold tofu (you have choice of hot or cold) which was sitting in this delicious cold soymilk; the two color tofu are Green Tea tofu and Buckwheat Tofu. The tofu were So silky smooth and fresh! The came another little small bite size soy dish, tofu skin over rice, and side of pickles. Overall each plate was delicious and exquisite - they were all very small. If it wasn't for the Tofu Skin over Rice, we would not have been full. The Tofu Skin over rice was a little disappointing, i wish it was bigger sheets of tofu skin but they were just chopped up tofu skin with lots of gravy sauce on top of decent scoop of rice. If i ever return, i would probably have choose the Tempura on Rice instead of the tofu skin.
The atmosphere / ambience was amazing! each corner of the restaurant has a good view whether it's the view of the Katsura River or their little garden -- it's all very calm and soothing...
Read moreWe were heading toward the iconic Togetsukyō Bridge (渡月橋) in Arashiyama when hunger struck. By chance, we wandered into Matsugae (豆腐料理 松ヶ枝), a tofu specialty restaurant, and it turned out to be an extraordinary find.
The meal began with an exquisitely arranged appetizer platter, a symphony of vibrant colors and textures. Each bite showcased the refined artistry of Kyoto cuisine, where simplicity meets sophistication.
The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the signature matcha and white tofu blocks, presented in a striking checkered pattern. Silky smooth and subtly flavored, the tofu embodied the essence of Kyoto’s culinary elegance. The dish perfectly balanced richness and delicacy, allowing the pure flavors of the ingredients to shine through.
Adding to the experience, we were seated in a private room, a serene haven adorned with traditional Japanese decor. The tranquil ambiance enhanced the meal, making it a feast not only for the palate but also for the soul.
This was a truly unforgettable dining experience that seamlessly blended exquisite food with a peaceful atmosphere. Matsugae is a must-visit for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in Kyoto's culinary and...
