Saryo Tsujiri Tea House, Gion Main Store — Restaurant in Kyoto

I was greatly looking forward to visiting this teahouse, but was a little disappointed when I got there. I had expected to have the ability to share the product that I was going to get, the matcha parfait, with another person in my group, although much to my dismay, there is a rule that each person must buy one item. I did enjoy the parfait but got nowhere close to finishing it, I probably only ate half of the dish (and I was quite sad about this). In my opinion, the sizes of the dishes served here warrant the removal of that rule: the matcha parfait is the perfect size to be shared between two people! The many components are each very intense and sweet, too much to be solely for one person. Additionally, this rule makes it very difficult for those that do not like matcha to enter with the rest of their group. I recognise that this shop is designed for those who like matcha and tea, but they are bound to visit with people who dislike it as well (but those people are still required to buy things). The ONLY option on the menu that did not involve tea was a melon soda with ice cream on top, and I believe it was fairly overpriced. Overall, the Tsujiri Tea House Gion Main Shop had a very tasty matcha parfait, but its rule of 'one dish per person' makes it substantially more difficult to enjoy such a large dish. Review is for the upstairs dine in cafe. Pretty much a scam place to avoid. Sits you down and served hot tea, then upon ordering, gets told each person must order one, including kids and each Parfait costs an average of 1500 yen, with the cheapest dessert/drinks going about 800 yen. We were pissed that there was no prior warning as Parfait are usually shared and not eaten solo, yet being forced to order 3 of their overpriced desserts was really a terrible rule. Uses the tea to make it difficult for you to leave after seating down, and pressures you to buy the lower priced items which don't look appetising to satisfy their rule.

Dessrts were average and even chains like maccha house does better. Take your money elsewhere and avoid this place, basically a trap imo. If such a rule is to be imposed, it should be made clear to guests before entry to...

This is by far one of my (unfortunately) not so great experiences in Japan. Came by this place right when it opened and found it to be gradually packed with locals. Thought it was a great place to kickstart our final morning before heading off to catch our Shinkansen.

We sat on the 2nd floor and tables with locals’ orders came first. We waited over 30min for an iced matcha drink and a sweet Japanese snack set. The table next to us who came later than us, had already finished their meal when our items came. When asked the staff didn’t seem to be too bothered that our food took over 30min to be ready while everyone else around us had finished.

I have heard of places rejecting foreigners but for a relatively touristy spot like this with an English menu; it was certainly disappointing that this happened. I do hope it was...
