Stumbled upon this whiskey tasting bar near our hotel and glad we decided to go in. This bar only opened 3 weeks ago and the selection of scotch and Japanese whiskey was vast (not just the usual suspects or Suntory brands), including many limited release bottles that are difficult to find abroad. There also was memorabilia from Star Wars and Jordan/Bulls era which added to the whole experience. We did a preset flight of whiskey and then sampled a few additional bottles, all of which were amazing. Masashi was friendly, attentive, and provided great recommendations for whiskey based on our preferences. Overall, great experience to do some whiskey tasting and highly unique given the tasting-only aspect of any bottle in the bar (they do not sell bottles themselves). Whiskey lovers should definitely add this to their list when visiting Kyoto!

We are officially in love with Japanese whiskey thanks to this place. If you're a whiskey enthusiast or just looking for a unique bar experience, WHISKY SPOT CHALMUN'S TOYBOX is a must-visit. Cheers!

I had the very fortunate chance to find this while walking back to my hotel, and what it little gem it is. Very unassuming from the outside, when you step inside, you feel like you’re transported to a shrine to whiskey (and Star Wars memorabilia).. Chalmun is an excellent host, and was able to guide me through a curated flight of 4 Japanese whiskeys. I had a great time learning about different distilleries, styles, and techniques of Japanese Whiskey. I will be back during my stay in Kyoto, and encourage anyone interested in Japanese whiskey to drop in.

My boyfriend and I (both 30 year old Americans) went to this spot spontaneously for a drink before a dinner reservation down the block, and we greatly enjoyed ourselves, and would highly recommend for both the drink selection and the atmosphere! I had a craft beer, he had the whiskey flight tasting. The selection of whiskey is truly staggering. The owner/bartender is also extremely friendly and clearly takes lots of pride and interest in his craft. He also has lots of collector’s items all around the bar (NBA Jordan gear, guitars, Star Wars items) that he loved discussing when we asked him about it.
