My husband and I visited for dinner. We’re foreigners and it’s clear given our melanin and English. We ordered our food. However, when my husband tried to communicate that he wanted a fried egg with his rice there was an initial lack of understanding. My husband then looked up how to say fried egg in Japanese before requesting that with the server/cook. As the server understood he went back to the cook the egg and smiled and laughed as he spoke with the other server/cook on the line. Then as we wrapped up our meal, the same server/cook was cleaning the table next to us and began smiling and laughing as if we were doing something improper as we grilled our items. He then proceeded to speak to his coworker, as they both stared and laughed at us for reasons unbeknownst to us. It was in that moment I wanted to leave immediately.
