One of the problems of staying in Tokyo is that it's hard to find places that offer both a Western and Japanese breakfast, and which open early. I think Jonathan opens at 6am.
It's a little difficult to navigate how things work at first as there is no table service. Literally you're on your own in this self-service restaurant.
Sit anywhere and look for the tablet on the table. Select the English option unless you are proficient in Japanese. There are photos of each of the dishes on offer. Navigate through and add the items you want to order to the cart. Be sure to include the drinks option if it's not already included in the meal you are ordering.
Once you submit, that's it for now. Help yourself to drinks. Unfortunately the options on the tea and coffee machines are only in Japanese katakana, so if you can't read katakana you're playing a game of chance. You are able to return for refills, by the way.
Our food was brought to the table by a woman, but some people have said theirs was delivered by a "robot". The woman left a check at the table, and when you're ready to go, you take it to a self-service payment area, and scan the code that's on the check you were given. Be sure to select the English option if you don't read Japanese.
This restaurant is on the Western side of Shinjuku station in what appears to be the financial district. We went on a Saturday morning and it was not busy at all, but I imagine on workdays it's possibly going to be crowded because of its location.
Note that the restaurant name (Jonathan) is only written in katakana on the sign outside. I didn't think to take a photo of it, but the background is blue and white vertical stripes if I remember correctly, and the lettering is red.
If you can navigate all of this, I thought it was a great breakfast. I had the Japanese breakfast of grilled salmon, miso soup, rice with grains, some nori seaweed, pickles, and a side of natto (fermented soy beans, an acquired taste, but a super healthy food if you get past the initial ick factor that most Westerners experience. Lots of vitamin K2 and fiber). I also had a side of acai yoghurt which was...
Read moreI had a very enjoyable breakfast at Jonathan’s Nishishinjuku branch. The Tandoori Chicken with Pilaf was delicious — well-seasoned, juicy, and served in a generous portion. The price was also very reasonable for the quality and quantity.
What impressed me even more was the staff’s outstanding service. I accidentally left my hotel keycard at the table, and when I returned, the staff had safely kept it and returned it to me with a warm smile. Truly excellent service mind and attention to detail.
Convenient location, great food, and kind staff — I highly recommend this branch for anyone staying in the...
Read moreGave 5 stars for atmosphere and service cause I've never been served my food by a robot before! The food was tasty, the tiger shrimp was yummy, the Johnathan salad was fresh and crunchy and cold. The seafood dish was super cheesy, maybe a little too cheesy. Fun place though Id come...
