AGAVE — Restaurant in Tokyo

Beware of Agave. Been at many bars in the world. Singapore , Vietnam, Thailand, Hongkong, India, USA, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, Spain, France, Netherlands, Sweden etc. but this experience took the low spot. I wanted to revisit Agave as I had a good memory from a visit 20 years back, what a mistake. Ordered a Cristalino tequila and a margarita and my wife a frozen margarira. Asked if I could change the blanco tequila in the margarita to a lower price one than the one they used. When the bill came they charged me for a special cocktail , 1500 yen more than the price of the margarita in the menu, total 4500 Yen. Agave is still a favourite hunt for cigar lovers. Unfortunately they’ve lost a lot of their old experienced waiters. They seem to not be able to find and keep a chef that can actually cook. Let alone cook Mexican. They’ve cut their drinks menu - aside from tequila based drinks - from a book sized menu to one page. JPY4.000 for a small glass of good quality rum is also on the very high end. Not to say somewhat over priced when there is no live music etc. The decline is reflected in lack of visitors on a Friday night. Used to be packed. It’s a shame as the decor is unique. Location excellent and the ability to smoke cigars hard to come by.

Down in the basement of the building which always seems a little worrisome for novice travellers. Once inside warmly greeted by friendly staff. The ambience is a relaxed Mexican cantina because of the large selection of tequilas and food set in a dimly lit environment with jazz music. It does advertise as a cigar bar not sure what they sold as I brought my own and they didn't mind that at all and didn't charge a cigar fee.
