Read moreA GEM! I first visited Bar Livet in 2018, not knowing anything about it, but stumbled off the elevator into an amazing representation of a Tokyo Whisky bar in the middle of the hustle of Shinjuku. It was a visit I would not forget, as the level of service and the variety of the whisky selection is quite respectable. I had been to many other whisky bars across Japan, but Bar Livet stands out for sure! Tons of rares and independent bottles, guaranteed to find a few unknowns for even the most hardcore whisky collector. Prices are very fair and reasonable, and you can order half shots in case you want to try many different whiskies. I always suggest lining up at least three at a time to compare, although sometimes I line up around 10 at a time. The staff are extremely attentive and knowledgeable, and speak good English, although if you are looking for something very specific, just use Google translate. Last time I went, Yuto and Takumi were very helpful, you will enjoy their company! They also sell cigars and cigarettes, but I stick to the great whisky. If you find yourself in Shinjuku on an evening, they open around 7pm, make a stop, although their sister bar called the Whisky Saloon is just around the corner and opens around 5pm. I've been to Bar Livet three times in the last week since I've been in town, and sure to stop by a couple more times before I...
Read moreBest cocktail bar I’ve been to in absolutely ages and maybe the BEST COCKTAIL I HAVE EVER TASTED!!!!
Tiny little place, with maybe 7 seats but an unbelievable selection of whiskies, so pretty much paradise for a whiskey lover…just shelf after shelf of them and the guy behind the bar seemed to know a lot about them.
My wive enjoyed her cocktail but mine was a unique variation on an Old Fashioned called Remember 18 — and actually you could barely call this a variation on an Old Fashioned as all the ingredients have been modified, except the presence of whiskey, which was an 18 year old Glenlivet. Added to the mix were some smoked herbs, some moscatel sherry, a little Pernod and some ginger beer. BUT THE RESULT WAS SIMPLY DELICIOUS. I congratulate whoever dreamed this up, and I will be trying to recreate it when I get back to the UK.
If I am ever back in Tokyo, you can be sure I will drop in to...
