Finally found the time to hit this place. Situated in the new, sadly much smaller, Commune spot near to Omotesando station. It’s not everyday you see a Scottish sandwich shop, never mind a shop selling haggis sandwiches! As a scotsman I had to try the Macbeth, haggis, cheese, mustard and rocket. I would’ve had my kilt revoked, had I not. 1st things first….is it real haggis? I have been disappointed before in Japan when the “haggis” turned out to be beef mince. I separated some out from the overflowing cheddar cheese….the cheese pull was pretty damn good….and it LOOKED like haggis. I could see oats and “other” ;) lovely bits that usually make up haggis but I didn’t really get that distinct haggis taste….I’m not 100% it’s proper, mash-up-your-sheep-insides and toss your caber haggis. :) That said it tasted fine. It was on good seeded bread, not just normal white crap…..BUT…..and here it comes. It’s a toastie! 2 slices of bread, cheese and filling….¥1600! I hadn’t noticed how old the photos on here are of the menu…..prices are up by half. I know haggis is rare here, even more so if it is real (is it?!)….but ¥1600 for a toasted sandwich?! It wasn’t particularly big. There was a lot of cheese but the other toppings weren’t stuffing the sandwich out. There wasn’t a side of fries or coleslaw or the like. It was a toasty for ¥1600. It tastes fine….but imo it’s not value for money. The new commune spot is not as good a spot as the old one. Overall I was a tad...
Read moreI’m no food description guy in the normal sense. But I had pleasure of having the Macbeth toastie and it was beyond my expectations. I was a little worried about the size but the portion of the toastie alone is just nice for a light meal. I arrived before noon on a Friday and the food truck was empty so lucky me!
Despite having a good serving of cheese which fills the expanse of the bread, you never feel like it’s too much. And let’s talk about the burnt cheese on one end and the gooey side on the other. This alone gives the toastie a variety of texture and flavour from corner to corner.
The haggis blends in perfectly with the mix together with the spinach. Those who are squeamish after reading about the contents of haggis should not be worried all about any gaminess here because it doesn’t exist. It has the chew of a very tender and sparse patty.
An honourable mention goes to the sandwich wrapper. It doesn’t tear easily and any residual melted cheese on it can be easily peeled off so you completionists can hit your 100%...
Read moreIt's rare a place is just as good years after you last ate there, but Deeney's was just as good as I remember. The bread is perfectly toasted golden and buttery brown. The haggis has just a subtle herbal layer that works well with cheese. The restaurant is small, two tables and bar seating so I can see it filling up quick. This really isn't a spot for little kids so I would say take it to go if you got family. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant does accept electronic payments. Location is a good 10 to 15 minute walk from the nearest train station, so while you are in the neighborhood you might as well take it easy and enjoy the food! Coffee was well made and strong which is hard to come by....
