When you first see the store it manages to stand out as beautifully landscaped even among the prettily manecured rows of shops and homes in Omote-Sando. It has a pleasant sprinkling of trees and flowers which can be seen from inside since the modern and minimalist achcitctur of the store has big windows instead of walls. As you sit and wait for your order, which may take a while as my order did, you at least get to do so with the view of the color of the flowers and the Tokyo skies.
Since I came with a friend and got to try a couple of combos: A coffee and a lemoncello doughnut A Chai latte and a kinako doughnut
So far I find people in Tokyo prefer their coffee strongly acidic, which I don't like personally. Still it paired well with the sweet lemoncello well enough.
But it was the second combo that had my heart (and tongue) singing. The Chai was delicious, and slightly sweet. The kinako doughnut was an unexpect treat! The kinako (or soy powder) was not sweet, but mildly salty with an umami flavor, and the doughnut was mildly sweet and had the perfect texture of soft and chewiness to have an exciting mouthfeel. So if you don't have a major sweet tooth or like sweet and salty treats this doughnut, or even this combo is perfect for you!
They have seasonal flavors and through the other reviews here I found out that the lemoncello doughnut was a seasonal flavor. I didn't check if the kinako was seasonal...
Read moreThough I can't say anything for the coffee... I bought some donuts and was really surprised by it. For a place that prides itself in donuts they sure are oily.
This kind of heaviness I think is from old oil? I took two bites and couldn't finish it. I brought the rest home and my family member also mentioned that the oil seemed a bit old.
The friend that was with me very happily enjoyed the donut. I think for average people the donuts are very tasty if they are freshly fried. For people who are sensitive to old oil or heavy oil this is definitely not the place for you!
I highly recommend the management consider either using a different kind of oil or using fresh oil daily! Either that or changing the temperature at which the donuts are fried at. Something isn't right.
The 30 minute time limit is a bit ridiculous but I think they are trying hard not to strictly enforce it when the cafe is not crowded? With such a time limit in place I think a lot of people will choose another cafe to patron.
The service isn't particularly good but it's not particularly bad either. You can't blame the employees for not having been properly trained...
Read moreI went here with my husband and two babies today. One was in the carrier on me and the other (reluctantly) in the stroller. After ordering and going outside someone came up to us telling us we had to fold our stroller up which made no sense as another family had a stroller right next to us and they weren’t told to fold theirs up. With all the stuff in the stroller basket it took us a minute to get everything out, plus a tired toddler that we really didn’t want to take out when someone came back outside to tell us again to fold up the stroller. This was really frustrating as the family next to us wasn’t told to fold theirs up, it felt like they were targeting just us. Any parent could appreciate wanting to keep their little one in the stroller at certain times and this was the least opportune time for her to be taken out of it. I had ordered juice (for my toddler) but the cup/lid they put it in was too hard for her to drink out of so I went inside to ask for a straw and they told me they charged for it. All in all it was a truly off putting experience (thankfully the first one we’ve had in Japan) and the matcha latte and doughnuts...
