Kagurachaya is a 5 star café that serves the absolute best matcha latte in Kyoto. From the moment you walk through the door, you know you're in for a sublime experience.
The café has a traditional Japanese aesthetic with tatami mat floors, wooden tables and minimalist decor that features sculptures and artwork. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing, with soothing background music and friendly baristas. There is an outdoor garden that provides a tranquil space to enjoy your matcha latte al fresco.
The star of the show is, of course, the matcha latte. They use only the finest ceremonial grade Japanese matcha sourced from Uji, Kyoto's renowned "tea city". The matcha is whisked to order, using traditional techniques, to create the perfect texture - not too thick, not too thin. When you take your first sip, the rich umami flavour of the matcha simply explodes in your mouth. You can taste every subtle note - bitter, slightly astringent, yet with a lingering sweet finish.
The latte art created by the baristas while preparing your drink is truly an art form in itself. They take time to create beautiful designs that perfectly complement your matcha experience. The latte arrives at your table in an aesthetically pleasing ceramic cup that helps retain the heat.
In addition to the matcha latte, Kagurachaya offers a variety of Japanese sweets and cakes that are simply divine when paired with the café's signature drink.
From start to finish, every aspect of Kagurachaya's matcha experience is flawlessly executed and totally deserving of 5 stars. Read moreMy friend and I were walking over to Khaosan hostel, and I saw a sign for green tea beer. After stopping by the hostel (and my friend deciding he was going to take a nap) I decided to head back and grab a beer. I didn't have high hopes for it initially and wasn't too relieved when I asked the shopkeeper if it was good and she replied with a "well, it's kind of like...". But after she made some fresh matcha, poured it into the beer glass, and instructed me to slowly pour the beer in, I was pleasantly surprised at how the grassy, slightly bitter matcha added a really interesting aroma and taste to the beer! Anyways, sat there for almost an hour chatting on and off and really enjoyed the time. Super friendly shopkeeper, cozy small little place, delicious ice cream and sweets, and a nice few seats out front for people watching as well. Go...
