The rice was not tasty at all. The grilled fish was also very unappealing. Especially for tourists visiting Japan, I think this is definitely a restaurant they should avoid. They claim to serve OHITSU rice, but it's just rice cooked in a rice cooker and transferred to an OHITSU before serving. There's nothing special about it, and the rice even smells like it's from a rice cooker. It's not freshly cooked either. It's clear that the rice has been sitting for hours after being cooked.
The grilled fish seems to be cooked before the customers arrive and just reheated for serving. Its texture and aroma are worse than frozen food. Many of the customers are tourists from overseas. It's incredibly disappointing and sad to think that people come all the way from abroad to Japan, hoping to experience authentic Japanese cuisine, only to be served food from this restaurant.
There are many cheaper and tastier options available in Japan. Even chain Japanese restaurants offer much better food at less than half the price of this place. I don't want people to eat at this restaurant and get the wrong impression about the standard of Japanese cuisine. I strongly recommend dining elsewhere.
The first page of the restaurant's menu boasts about the owner's commitment to rice, but that seems to be just for show. If they truly cared, they wouldn't serve such awful rice. It was one of the most unpleasant dining experiences I've had in a long time. I hope no one else goes to this restaurant. I posted this solely for the...
Read moreA underground teishoku eatery that ticks all the boxes! Tasty well prepared fish or meat in generous portions. Had a problem deciding which meal to choose (which is in Japanese/English with pics). In the end we had the grilled gindara and broiled unagi both which were just right in terms of its smokiness combined with tender soft flakiness. The generous rice serving is served in a warmed container. In addition, the rice can be eaten ochazuke style as a pot of brown rice dashi with condiments is served.
There is no reservation. And this is not a place to linger . Cash only terms. Will be back to try...
Read moreWe read about Ohitsuzen Tanbo on a few food lists for Tokyo and it met all expectations. The staff was very sweet, the place is cute, and the food was great. The salmon and ikura over rice, which is one of the recommended dishes, is excellent and the price point isn't bad for Tokyo.
There are a variety of ways you can enjoy the ohitsuzen, and although it can get crowded, we went after the rush around 2pm and were immediately seated. We found it very easily, as others have said, it's below the wine cave. Highly...
