If you’re craving traditional Japanese comfort food without the frills, Ootoya Shimbashi is a gem worth discovering. Tucked away on the second floor, this casual spot delivers everything you’d hope for in a home-style Japanese meal—hearty, satisfying, and full of flavor.
From grilled fish and simmered vegetables to miso soup and rice bowls, the menu is packed with classics that feel like a warm hug. I tried a bit of everything, and every dish hit the spot. It’s the kind of place where you can show up hungry and leave completely content.
What truly blew me away was the value. We had a group of seven, ordered generously, and the total came to under $70 CAD. That’s practically unheard of for Tokyo, especially in such a central location. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming—perfect for a casual meal with friends or family, without worrying about breaking the bank.

Fairly basic in terms of service (self-serve your drinks). But a good...
