Edit: I had the opportunity to return six years later, this time sharing my dining experience with my lovely wife. The food, service, and atmosphere remain excellent, and this time we enjoyed watching the very interesting people (hint: various sugar daddies ¬‿¬) who were also dining as much as the food itself. Still a highly recommended wagyu teppanyaki experience and I've updated my review with additional photos from the most recent visit.
This wagyu restaurant was recommended by my hotel and they have multiple locations across Tokyo. I elected to try the location in Roppongi as it was in the heart of the area and allowed for additional sightseeing or barhopping afterwards. The restaurant provides a number of set menus, and I elected the mid-level SERYNA dinner for 12,960 yen, which consisted of: amuse, hot appetizer, grilled prawn and scallop, wagyu prime sirloin, vegetable salad, garlic rice and miso soup, dessert and coffee. I upgraded to the use of Kobe beef for an additional 6,000 yen.
The amuse of spinach and mushrooms was clean and refreshing. The hot appetizer, which was a slow cooked beef stew, was savory and a bit heavier to further whet the appetite. Next was the first teppan grilled course, the prawn and scallop. Word of warning, the prawn is alive when they start grilling it. While the prawn and scallop were delicious, this might catch some people off guard. Next was the wagyu steak, which I ordered medium due to a bout of food poisoning the night before. It was purely buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture, and had a wonderful mouthfeel. The way the chef sliced through the beef made it apparent that it was going to be very tender even before I put the first piece in my mouth. Next was the string cut vegetable salad, which was a nice crisp, refreshing break from the meat. And to complete any Japanese meal, the chef grilled garlic fried rice accompanied by pickles and miso soup, superb.
After finishing the meal, you are taken to a separate area to enjoy your selected dessert and coffee to engage in conversation before ending the evening. Service, was top notch, as expected in Japan. The chefs and wait staff spoke enough English to describe each dish or drink, and all in all, this was a top...
Read moreLet me preface this by saying I have never written a review in my life and I feel obligated to warn others after such a disappointing meal.
To start, I am shocked that this place has such good reviews. It is ridiculously expensive for such mediocre food. I ordered the crab legs (5,500 yen [38 USD]) and expecting to get a decent sized/amount of crab legs, was served two incredibly small, lightly grilled crab legs. It turned out that the crab legs were appetizers. So how much were the entrees? From the a la carte menu, the cheapest entree was more than 90 USD (the tasting menus were about 190 USD). Someone in my party ordered one of these 90 USD entrees, and was it good? Eh. Was it worth $90? Not even close! I wouldn’t pay more than $25 for most options on that menu (that I had the chance to try). Now to be fair, I’m sure the steak is pretty damn good. But be ready to shell out $150 for a steak (and just the steak, sides of rice and whatnot cost extra). I’m certain there are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper options for good meat in Tokyo that are SIGNIFICANTLY tastier.
Honestly, i thought we were getting PUNK’D—I was ready for us to finish our meal and the cameras to come out and let us know that it was obviously a joke and that they wouldn’t serve such comically small portions for such exorbitant prices. But no. I speculate that the concierges in the area are being paid (or otherwise incentivized) to direct naive tourists to this restaurant. There is absolutely no way 1) this restaurant has repeat customers, and 2) that it would survive without enthusiastic (albeit misleading) recommendations.
If you are wholly insensitive to costs, please visit. But even still, I highly doubt you’d enjoy the food. There are so many incredible places to eat in Tokyo, and this is certainly not one of them.
110%, this place is a tourist trap and please, for your sake, steer clear. Honestly, tourist trap doesn’t do it justice. This restaurant is a scam. Please, go spend your...
Read moreWas taken here as a guest of a very good friend and his wife. There were four of us in total. So my experience maybe a tad biased. It was superb from the moment I walked down the stairs to the moment I left. The way the staff treated us taking all our shopping bags and jackets and coats. Showing us to our table. Seating us. Then after a short while the food started appearing after a brief look at the menu. Then after the starters the chef appeared and was fluent in English and Japanese which helped a friend of mine out(first trip to Japan). Then the chef showed us the steak and it was a thing of pure foodie beauty! Stunning. And when I got the first taste of the steak it was so soft and juicy with a very nice taste. Light on seasoning. When the chef was finished he announced his departure and the desserts arrived. Everything made sense food wise. Japanese food is of an extremely high standard generally but this was a cut above. Way above. The closest thing I've had in London was at Caractère. I never saw the bill but one thing is for sure it was over £300. But...
