On our 2023 trip to Japan my wife and I were strolling early in the morning around Ameyoko just around the time the stands are getting ready to prepare for the day. Since we left our hotel on an empty stomach a good breakfast was needed ASAP. We are not familiar with the area so we do not have any specific favorite place, but as we walked we realized most of the places were getting ready or closed, and having onigiri and egg sandwiches from the conbini was not an option. We walked for 5 minutes and found this place, we took a peek from the outside and saw a couple having their meal already so that was a sign the place was open. We got inside and were greeted by the staff the usual way: irasshaimase!!!
We were kindly informed that otoshi would be charged and we agreed, I mean, is part of the culture, not related to tipping at all since at the end you will receive something in exchange.
We were given a table for two and the menu was handed to us. There were many options to choose from. My wife chose the simple okonomiyaki while I chose the special one (mikusu).
Before we started with the okonomiyaki the cook prepared for us the otoshi, it was prepared right in the table for us and was ready in a jiffy!
After a couple of minutes the cook came and prepared the okonomiyaki for us (I prefer this instead of preparing the okonomiyaki by myself since the cook knows quite well the cooking time). We just had to wait for a while for the okonomiyaki to be flipped and cooked on both sides.
Finally I was able to taste my okonomiyaki which was full of flavor, plenty of ingredients were added such as bacon, shrimp, octopus, squid, chicken and whatnot.
Remember that only a couple was there while my wife and I got there? Well, by the time our okonomiyaki was serve plenty of people starting to arrive, we just made it on time to have a table available.
All in all food was great, I'm definitely coming back on my next trip to Japan (2024), it was great to see that they open early in the morning before most of the...
Read moreExperience: I recently visited Tsukishimamonja Moheji Uenobunten, enticed by its impressive 4.6-star rating on Google. Eager to indulge in their reputed culinary delights, my excitement turned into a test of patience.
Waiting Time: Despite arriving early and placing my order for the unique experience of having the staff cook in front of me, the service left much to be desired. I found myself sitting patiently for around 30 minutes, watching as others who arrived after me experienced the interactive cooking session before me.
Staff Cooking Experience: While the atmosphere and ambiance were pleasant, the delayed cooking session overshadowed everything. I tried to inquire about the progress, but the responses were vague, leaving me feeling overlooked.
Food Quality: When my interactive cooking experience finally commenced, the food lived up to the restaurant's reputation. It was delicious and well-prepared, which almost made up for the extended wait.
Recommendation: If time is not of the essence, and you're willing to endure a longer wait for the unique staff cooking experience, Tsukishimamonja Moheji Uenobunten might still be worth a visit with its stellar 4.6-star rating on Google. However, for those seeking a timely and efficient dining experience, especially with interactive cooking, it might be wise to explore other options.
Conclusion: My visit to Tsukishimamonja Moheji Uenobunten left me with mixed feelings. The food was undoubtedly good, but the extended wait time and apparent lack of order management for the interactive cooking session diminished the overall experience. Hopefully, the restaurant can address these service issues to provide a more enjoyable interactive lunch environment for...

Food was ok only, but service was worse. We entered at around 11am and the restaurant was still quite empty. The first female server was ok and took our order with a smile. Everything went downhill after. Our food arrived later than the other table (whom they came in later and ordered after us) and it was just left on the table without being cooked. When we looked around, we saw that the servers were just serving other tables and once their food was placed on the table, the server immediately started cooking for them. We were wondering if this was the treatment given to foreigners where we were just made to wait like fools. After looking at our uncooked food for after 10mins or so, I decided to ask a staff for help but she just brushed me off and attended to the other tables instead and started cooking for them. It took another 10mins before a staff finally came to assist us. The staff then just left our food halfway while cooking also and left us dumbfounded.
WON'T EVER BE BACK THANKS TO THE STAFF'S BAD ATTITUDE...
