A must-visit kind place if you like Mexican flavors. Also, amazing coffee.
Mexican restaurants always felt like fast food diners to me. This one is the first one that felt like a restaurant.
I would place most Mexican food between fast food and average restaurant food. It was often tasty, but but still closer to junk food/diner food with generic flavors, that often blend into one. Casa Peligrosa still serves Mexican food, with similar flavors, but the flavors don't blend into 1 each dish had a unique accent.
Environment is very much that of casual Mexican restaurant.
Service was fast and very professional (in terms of behavior and actual table service), but waiters communicate casually. When I say "very professional" I mean it's above what you will get in an average restaurant. It's clear they take themselves and their food seriously. I could see they put effort into presentation of food as well, but there's only so much you can do with tacos.
I got Baby Calamari(10/10) as a starter. It was served with their own sesame tortilla and salsa roja sauce and garnished with a few cloves of fried(?) garlic. The squids themselves were fresh (not frozen) as far as I could tell and perfectly cooked. Heads were separated from tentacles tasted differently (same flavors, very different intensity and texture). Tentacles were firm (almost crunchy) and rich in flavor while heads were soft, slightly slippery and gentle flavored (to a point where I could feel something vaguely resembling the flavor of egg yolk). Garlic had a strong flavor, which is rarely the case with cooked garlic. Garlic gave a great contrast to the squids without overriding the squid flavor. Sauce does override the squids, so I used it separately.
Tacos with pulled brisket (9/10) surprised me the most. Despite having all the flavors you would expect in an authentic Mexican restaurant, the flavors didn't merge into 1. Smoked beef gives the main texture and flavor. Other things emerge on top, but don't stay long enough to become 1 with beef. They also offer their home made sauce on the side, which if used sparingly adds to the pallet of flavors that emerge from the beef, without overriding the beef. The only problem I found with these tacos is the classic issue pulled meat: when you try to get a piece you end up dragging the entire clump with it. Very few places offering dishes with cook meat even attempt to tackle this problem. As a cooked meat taco I think it's close to perfect, but I am reluctant rating it 10/10 because as a dish it still not close to Calamari, or other things I rate 10/10.
For desert, I got Corn Crème Brûlée(9/10) and a Black Coffee(10/10), which look great together (had to take a pic). Crème Brûlée is garnished with crunchy fried(?) corn. It's larger than in most places and while I wouldn't say it stands among the competition, it is on par with them. I thought I tasted corn flavor on the first bite, but I'm not certain, because I couldn't feel it later. I've eaten 1 Crème Brûlée that I liked better (due to texture), but all the others are very similar to this.
The Coffee blew me away. The last thing I expected from a Mexican restaurant with a tiny coffee/dessert selection is a perfect coffee. It had absolutely no sourness (most perceive it as bitterness) and a thin, but dense layer foam.
Finally, throughout my visit I was drinking 2 of their cocktails: Michelada (9/10; spicy) and Paloma(8/10). Cocktails will not land on my favorite lists, but I enjoyed them both.
Update: I made another visit, but I character limit prevents me from writing in detail.
Shrimp taco blends texture and spicy flavors nicely. I didn't know what to expect, ordering it, but I'll gladly give it a 10/10.
Octopus tentacle (8/10) was cooked to perfection (tender and juicy), but in my sweet potato and Pico de gallo (veggie) didn't fit as garnish as they override the flavor/texture of the tentacle.
Crunchy banana (8/10) contrasts soft and crunchy textures, warm/cold temperatures. I enjoyed it, but it's hilariously small (1/6...
Read moreMe and my husband came to Casa Peligrosa on a Sunday looking for some comfy and tasty food. The place itself is great, they have a cozy and cool atmosphere inside the restaurant, tables in the side walk and a few more options in the square across the street. We chose to sit right outside the restaurant in the side walk.
Service is welcoming and chill..the menu is small, making it easy to choose from.
We got two starters. Quesadillas with chorizo and scallop ceviche. The quesadillas were firee, nice and crunchy shell with juice cheesy filling and the sauce that comes with it is a perfect balance point. The scallop ceviche was very good looking and super refreshing, great textures and awesome flavor balance.
For the main we choose 03 different tacos that came in pairs. We got pork shoulder, brisket and shrimp tacos, all excellent..(pork was our favorite) ..Very delicious, well seasoned, great sauces and super juice.
We asked for a side of dark chocolate mole sauce and the server was happy to make it happen (even tho they didn’t offer sauces on the menu).
Got the corn crème brûlée for dessert. Also great!
We had three different cocktails: michelada, Paloma and a frozen mango marguerita.. all very beautifully presented and well executed.
We will definitely come back for more and recommend to everyone.
Big thanks to everyone involved, we had a great time. Keep it up the...
Read moreWe were really looking forward to our visit and unfortunately couldn't have been disappointed more. I usually don't leave bad reviews, but after I replied to the service staff's question if we enjoyed our food simply with "it was kind of okay" and she didn't ask anything in return I feel like I still have something left to say. Overall the service staff wasn't attentive and also not overwhelmingly welcoming. We waited almost an hour for our food with nobody checking in on us (instead the staff member was in front of the laptop facing us with her back!). After the food arrived I was in absolut shock that I had to wait and pay more than 20 Euro for 1 slice of sweet potato covered in radish. Also my partner left the restaurant hungry and unsatisfied. There were no side dishes like rice or beans simply 2 small tortillas with a over proportional big salad. The food itself didn't taste bad in any way, to stay fair but unfortunately not worth 74 Euro with 1 (soft) drink each in total! (Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying more for quality service and exceptional food. But this was...
