BISO Cocktail Bar — Restaurant in George Town

My recent and second visit to Georgetown in the island of Penang was an absolute blast thanks to the nightlife I got to experience this time mainly because of this creative and innovative bar that I came across called Biso! If you’ve been to Penang and know about this place, your recommendations on where to go in Penang to have a good time can be trusted because this is the type of place that you wouldn’t notice if you’re passing by as they’re kind of cleverly hidden in plain sight!

This hidden gem offers expertly crafted drinks with their own special uniqueness added on to it and if you’re an avid drinker or even just someone who can appreciate a nice drink then Biso is a place you should definitely visit! One of the most unique drinks that I’ve come across in Asia this year were at this bar that draws inspiration from several fruits and vegetables and utilizes many ingredients in their entirety without any waste which is certainly commendable! If you’re visiting in the next month then don’t forget to try out some of their drinks from their new menu whose launch coincides with their 1 year anniversary! I got to try some of them and was blown away by them!

As I walked inside, I was greeted by a relaxed atmosphere and an incredibly urban interior with dark and warm shades that contributes to the calm and quiet vibe.Their bartenders are so skilled and friendly and their drinks draw inspiration from 5 fundamental tastes: sweet, bitter, sour, salty and umami. I got to know about the back stories of many of their drinks and it was quite cool to learn about techniques and ways to extract and combine different flavours that I hadn’t even thought of! The first one I ordered was called the Min-Tea which featured various ingredients to bring out a refreshing flavor and texture. The combination of the peppermint cold brew and the mentha pastille gave the drink gave it a lovely flavor with that signature cooling aftertaste from the peppermint. The drink also had Kombucha and all the ingredients paired together wonderfully. My favourite part of this theatrical drink was the Mango air, which surprisingly tasted like Mango which I did not expect to actually carry the flavour its supposed to so well! It definitely was an integral part of the dish and not just for show according to me. The base for the drink was Gin which was an amazing choice and I’d highly recommend it!

The next drink was the 24 Karrot Gold which looked the most appealing out of the drinks I ordered! So elegant and beautifully presented! Sitting across the bartender while they craft this drink from scratch was wonderful to witness! It had a beautiful red color with nice velvety cream cheese on top of it which gave a satisfying texture to the drink, and was topped with a touch of gold to emphasize the drink’s luxe nature! The taste of this drink was just as pleasant as its appearance. A warm flavor with hints of sweetness coming out after each sip made me keep going in for more. The aromatic spice from the Cocchi Rosa further enhanced the flavor and balanced out the ginger cordial extremely well. With the taste of the fresh carrot they also used which provided a little bit of earthiness to the drink, going brilliantly well with a high quality Gin and I feel like it had such complex depth to its flavor and was also easy to drink which made me savor the flavor more.

The last drink of the day was the Double Espresso which blew me away completely as it was transparent and crafted so scientifically through distillation that makes you go wow! It had a beautiful flavor profile on top of the stunning visuals of the drink. It was made with several different ingredients that provided quite an intense coffee flavor. Super cool to see the use of such techniques. With the coffee distillate, the Kahlua Paint and Espresso Martini Sphere both worked together to deliver a stronger taste.
