I discovered this place based on a recommendation from a friendly local uncle I met at Masjid Kapitan Keling Road. He kindly suggested the best roti stall in town when I asked for a reliable recommendation, and I immediately added it to my must-try list.
Contrary to popular belief, the famous and well-known roti places often disappoint locals who seek an authentic roti experience. However, this place is different. I witnessed locals from various backgrounds, including busy professionals, enjoying their breakfast here, which is a testament to its popularity among the local community.
Now, let's delve into the food review. I ordered the double egg roti with meat, and it was absolutely delightful. The meat was tender and easy to chew, and the curry added a delightful Penang-style spiciness that complemented the roti perfectly. I appreciate how they stay true to the classic style of roti without incorporating cheese, preserving its traditional essence. However, there is room for improvement in the texture and sweetness of the teh tarik. While it wasn't the best I've ever had, it certainly wasn't the worst either. Nevertheless, pairing an exquisite roti with a perfect teh tarik is important, and I would still return for another visit.
Moving on to the service, the restaurant owner and workers were incredibly helpful. Despite my casual attire in pajamas, they promptly attended to me and allowed me sufficient time to review the menu before taking my order. The wait time for my food was approximately 8 minutes, which was reasonable considering it was a weekday morning with few customers around (around 7:30 AM).
Regarding the ambiance, I have no complaints. Morning in Penang can be a bit warm and stuffy, but this is to be expected in a typical Mamak cafe environment.
Overall, this was the best roti experience I've had, and I am thoroughly satisfied with my choice to have breakfast...
Read moreA bad experience this morning. I was the first there and I ordered 2 pieces of roti canai with 2 pieces of beef with curry. While waiting for my order to arrive, I turned on my tablet and started surfing the net, reading up on the news. My order eventually arrived while I was busy reading so I barely noticed what was delivered. On my first bite though I detected that things were a bit off with the curry but just brushed it aside as a minor issue. There were also two chunks of bone with the meat which I thought was unusual. I don’t cook so I didn’t realise what that meant. I decided to quickly finish the meal and be on my way while dismissing the whole experience as an off day for the restaurant. I then went to the cashier to pay the bill and was taken aback when it came to MYR20.60. I immediately questioned them why it was so expensive. To my surprise and horror, the cashier told me that the meat was goat meat instead of the beef that I ordered. To be clear I do not eat goat meat as it has an unpleasant odour and taste. I raised a fuss there and then and asked the staff there that since I was a regular there, did they ever see or hear me order goat meat. It was always either beef or chicken! To be fair, they admitted their mistake and apologised, although the elderly man that took my order insisted that I had ordered goat meat. By then I had enough and quickly settled the bill to rush home to get rid of the lingering taste in my mouth. I’m going to have to think twice about ever going back...
Read moreWe finally got to try the Roti Canai at Agryl. The food was very good. We ordered 1 Roti with onion and egg. 1 plain. 1 goat curry. We were served 2 plates of goat curry( wrong) and 1 roti with egg and onion and another with egg(wrong). The people serving were all elderly, so we did not make a fuss and ate it. The surprise came when he charged us $32 MYR just for just the goat. Which was ridiculous. When my husband pointed out to me to look at the board, the cashier immediately looked away. The board said the goat was $8 a piece. When I asked the cashier he said, we had 4 pieces of meat so $32 ( we had only ordered 1 serving of meat). We only had 2 pieces, but since we could not prove it, we left silently. So word of caution. Take a picture of what you ordered, if possible pay before you eat. They knew we were tourist,so they took advantage of us. Ask any local, for $32/ we could cook goat for a whole family. Not impressed. The Transfer Roti Canai served hot meat curry and great roti Chanai for less the 1/2 the cost. It was great. Transfer road coffee and tea was also served...
