Went to Hiap Joo the first time after read the mixed reviews, and still wanna to give it a try. What can goes wrong with a shop over 100 years? It is tough to find a parking lot so we parked rather far and walk there. Bought 1 box of banana cake, one packet of red bean paste buns and one packet of coconut buns. We tested it immediately (to decide whether to grab more), the cake and buns are all just out from oven not long ago so the seller told us to keep the packaging open. The banana cake is soft anf fluffy but banana taste not very strong. The buns are just normal with a little bit of nostalgic taste. They are nothing very special that give you a "wow, OMG".... But they are fresh. Then we have decided to buy more because we find it not bad, so we grab another 3 boxes of banana cakes and 2 each flavour of buns (they have kaya too but we did not buy). They have otah buns, butter cake, coffee cake etc (but not really a lot of variety) but the seller said those only available in the morning. Maybe they sell different stuff in the am and pm, because i read someone said they didn't manage to buy banana cake when they went there morning (they open at 7.30am till 4.30pm). We tried the banana cake next morning and find it tastes better because the full flavour has developed overnight. it is just like butter cake, pandan cake or fruits cake, it tastes better after 1-2 days. Overall i would say worth to go and try, for the price and nostagic feeling.

A old school setting behind OCBC bank. There was a queue at 4pm on a weekday but the queue moved quickly. It is located near the herbal roast duck restaurant. We were also served quickly. The young boss was matter of factly but in no way, impatient or rude. I do not know if they have several variety of bakes because the banana cake was the only things I bought . I alone bought 6 large boxes and 2 small boxes. A large box of 10 banana cakes costs RM20 and a small box of 5 banana cakes costs RM10. The cakes were sold piping hot. The steam could still be seen when the box was covered. The cake was soft, moist and flavourful. The awesome thing is it wasn’t sweet. The taste was pleasant that I could eat a few pieces at a go. After 2 days, the cakes remained moist and fresh even though I did not place them in the refrigerator. I love the simple goodness of the cake. I reminisced about the wonderful taste even two week after tasting them. It will be my sure to drop by place whenever I visit JB. Hor Jiak !

I don't even like coconut bun but Hiap Joo impressed me. I was wondering what's the hype about this bakery but when I sinked my teeth into a freshly baked bun, it all made sense. A crusty charred outer and a soft and fluffy inner filled with fragrant coconut filling that isn't too sweet. You can taste the difference from the charcoal oven not just from the texture of the crust but there is this smoky fragrance to it. Runs out fast. Went back on second day and it was out by afternoon. Banana cake was very very soft and delicious too. Kaya was not smooth like how we are used to for commercial kayas. It was grainy (from coconut I think?) and somewhat watery but has its own distinctive flavours. Worth a try. Definite would buy a truckload of coconut bun home next time.

Located at the soon to be converted pedestrain mall with paved walkway. The stall is located near the crossroads all coffeeshops offering desserts and snacks. It is just a stone throw away from the Hainanese Chicken chop Restaurant. Hiap Joo had been in business over a century (since 1919) as claimed. The famous Banana Cake is indeed match it legacy. It came warm and it is soft and moist. There is no hint of artificial flavouring. Since there is a coffeeshop located just opposite the bakery, it is quite obvious that the banana cake and coffee makes excellent pairing. Parking can be tight as there are limited parking lots available and please be prepared to walk a little further to find one or take the risk of parking at the no parking zone.

Thanks to google recommendation that led us to here! A couple days before we off to Johor I was browsing where we should eat. If you know me, traveling with me most likely culinary hunt 😂 Anyway, there was a queue already when we arrived but not as bad as second visit. They sale the cake only one size like the picture (CMIIW) for MYR 12 which like NZD 2! The cake was good. Not dry and moist. You could taste the banana blended well with the sweet. Not too strong which I like! Perfect to enjoy it with coffee or tea. They have other flavors that you could try. If you buy together with friends, that would be great. Otherwise it’s such a waste by your self have this big 😄 it took us ( 2 person) 3-4 days to finished it up

Went there for the first time and managed to grab myself their banana cake fresh out of the oven which they'll ask you to leave the boxes open because of how hot it is. Was informed that their bread had sold out when I arrived around 2pm. Bear in mind you will have to wait sometime to get to your turn. You'll definitely smell the cake when it comes out of the oven leaving a lingering scent in the air. As for the taste, it is okay. It doesn't have the strong banana taste as I was hoping for so slightly disappointed. Although I'm still happy that it's fresh and how nice they are towards my enquiries of being a first timer. Hoping to try their bread next time.
