My wife and I, two joyful retirees, avoid going to KL on Fridays as much as possible — in fact, we try not to go anywhere at all — because of the after-5pm Friday traffic madness. It’s double or triple the nightmare of other days — almost a guarantee. If we must go, we'd hit the road and head home before 4pm. Or take the train.
But one Friday, we threw caution to the wind and drove to The Gardens Mall in KL, for a Japanese shabu-shabu buffet lunch at Wagyu More.
We didn’t exactly ignore our own advice — we just bent our rule a little, thinking it was safe since we had a few other things to do at the mall and planned to leave only after the evening rush had eased.
Now, about the actual dining experience.
We are regulars at another similar buffet restaurant. So, we thought we’d give Wagyu More a try for a change, since we needed to be at The Gardens Mall anyway.
Wagyu More is a Hong Kong chain with two outlets in Malaysia: The Gardens Mall and Sunway Pyramid.
Did we regret the decision? Not at all.
Price, meat, broth, sides, and sauces — quality, variety, and taste — are all on par. The only letdown was the fish slices — we didn’t like their texture; they weren’t firm.
Atmosphere and service are on point: vibrant, cheerful, attentive, and quick to replenish.
Besides the freshness of the meats, my wife and I particularly enjoyed Wagyu More’s Wagyu beef fried rice, fried popiah, mala meatballs, lobster balls, mini youtiao cubes, potato wedges, mochi, and watercress honey beverage. I’m sure our list would’ve been longer if we had more stomach space.
The waiting crew are all locals, and the menu includes premium meats (at extra charge) like Black Angus beef, Iberico pork, Wagyu beef, and signature lamb for those in the mood to splurge.
Seniors and students enjoy 20% off. After discount, we paid RM49.95 nett (NP RM62.40 nett) per head for our deluxe set of unlimited servings of chicken, pork, fish, and beef.
We thoroughly enjoyed our nearly 120-minute (time allotted) “gluttony” — burp, burp! We savoured quite a variety — though not every side — and completely forgot the sweet finale: ice cream!
Did we escape the Friday jam in the end? Alas, no. We failed to accomplish both our post-lunch missions and decided to brave the traffic home after 5pm. The result? A solid two hours in the snarl — what should’ve been a mere 30-minute drive. Sigh!

Read moreI’ve been a regular customer, but this was our worst experience yet. My parents traveled from another state, and we wanted to enjoy a nice meal together as a family of six. We tried making a reservation via the Facebook Messenger platform at 5:30 PM but were told that we needed to walk in to book a table.
We did so, and when we arrived at Wagyu More at 6 PM, the front desk informed us that the restaurant was busy on Saturday night, but there would be a table available for us at 8 PM and that we should await their phone call when the table was available. We were fine with that and decided to wait in The Garden for two hours.
When we returned to check on our table at 8 PM, the waitress told us we would need to wait longer because the previous customers had not yet finished their two-hour slot, even though they had already paid their bill. We ended up waiting an additional 15 minutes for them to leave and for the table to be cleared.
We were also informed that the last call would be at 9:30 PM for ordering meat, but it was not specified that this would also apply to the counter section—ice cream, drinks, sushi, etc. The manager stated there was nothing they could do about our situation, even though we had been served late. This left us with less than an hour to enjoy our meal, as we also wasted time ordering soup, waiting for it to boil, and using QR codes to order meat, which took a long time to arrive.
To add to our disappointment, we were given two tables for four, which meant my wife and I had to sit apart from our family. At exactly 9:30 PM, the meat menu was removed from the app, and drinks and desserts were cleared immediately. It felt as if we weren’t given a fair chance to enjoy our meal, and the waitstaff began clearing our table without hesitation. To sum it up, we ate for only one hour (from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM) due to the delay in getting the table from the previous customers.
It felt like they were more interested in making a quick cash than providing a good experience. While I understand the owner may be quick to respond to reviews for the sake of reputation, an apology alone does not suffice; a thoughtful gesture would go a long way in demonstrating genuine care for...
Read moreHad the honour of being invited for an Angus beef meal. Upon returning two weeks later, I was pleasantly surprised by the noticeable improvements! The meat quality had greatly enhanced, much fresher than my previous visits. The staff were also impressively proactive and attentive throughout the entire dining experience. I truly hope the standard of quality continues to be upheld, or even taken to greater heights.
————————————————————————- The positive reviews persuaded me to try it, but my experience was terrible. This will be my first and last time.
We chose the deluxe dinner buffet, but the quality of the beef was extremely disappointing. Just looking at its color and texture was enough to raise concerns—let alone the taste and texture after cooking. The meat provided for the deluxe option was so poor that we immediately upgraded to Black Angus beef. However, we couldn’t help but notice black spots and yellowish stains on the sliced beef. When we asked, we were told it was just blood. I’ve had shabu-shabu at chains like Momo Paradise and Shabu-Yo, but I’ve never encountered beef that looked this unappetizing before.
As for the vegetables, they were just basic local varieties—nothing special. The worst part was that they were torn and full of holes, making it look very unappetising. I tried the watercress, but it was tough and fibrous, making it hard to chew.
Aside from that, the prawns served were not fresh and had a mushy texture. Oh, and did I mention the flies swarming around our table?
I brought up all these issues with the waiter and a staff member at the counter named Jimmy. Instead of addressing my concerns, he dismissed me and told me to raise them via FB Messenger.
I hope this review serves as a heads-up for future diners so they can manage their...
