Summary: Old-school Malaysian steamboat at a reasonable price in a lively outdoor setting with damn good chicken wings and great seafood. Avoid the steamboat meat. Recommended for big groups
A landmark in Segambut, Segambut Yong Tau Foo (SYTF) serves YTF during the day and steamboat at night. The menu is massive, with 8 pages filled with all kinds of ingredients. I strongly recommend the seafood, which is reasonably priced and very fresh. We usually get the per pax set which has one each (per person) of many of their items and plenty of veg for variety. They only have two soups, pork bone and tom yam, so definitely get the yin-yang option to try both.
While most things are delicious, especially shrimp, fishballs, fish filet, and yong tau foo (definitely try the tau pok YTF for steamboat), I would avoid the meat which is frozen and overpriced. The lamb was so chewy it was almost inedible.
Also ask for their chicken wings which are grilled by a separate vendor on premises and are amazing - better than the ones on Jalan Alor imo.
Anyway, it's steamboat as you used to know it as a kid - no Szechuan mala or weird soups. Just quality ingredients and lots of choices. Give it a try for groups and especially with foreigners; it's clean and very...
Read moreIt used to be one of our regular lunch places when I was working at Batu caves a decade ago. Lately it has a competitor just further down after the river. It has been quite many years since I last patronised here. However my personal feedback is the food standard has dropped. The sauces watery. White taufoo has a very small piece of meat. However all stuffed veges came in huge cut pieces. The rojak fruits were also fresh and huge but was let down by the not so thick sauces. The grilled stuffed bean curd was nice for me. I try the steam Japanese sweet potato. Soft and sweet to me. I found the fried sui kaw hard and folded in a hurry causing inconsistent shape after frying. They all sell many fruits to take away. A display counter for pastry too. This is an old and big bungalow from the 60', I think. The place is a bit hot with only fans and no air cond. Service was very fast. They are still using paper and pens to order. No QR scan. E wallet is accepted though. My personal preference will be next door. Parking used to be very congested with the one way entry and one way exit. Now during my visit I can park...
Read moreThis is like the McD's of yong tau fu in terms of efficiency and speed. You write out your order on an order sheet, pass it to the waiter and boom! Your order gets to you in minutes!
One thing you will immediately notice is the generous size of the pieces of yong tau fu. Each piece costs RM2 + SST which is reasonable to me. Texture and timing of deep frying is right - you don't get the fillings falling out of the vegetable. Taste wise, I like the balance between fishmeat and pork in the filling. The chilli sauce could be better. I am not too keen on the taucheo based sauce which half-drowns the yong tau fu. I will ask for the sauce to be separated in the future.
It does get warm here (tip: sit inside the proper building not too far from the toilet. There is a huge ventilation fan there). Parking can be a challenge but there is a member of the staff who helps you to locate a parking space.
We also ordered the fruit rojak. It was not too bad. The fruit was fresh and the sauce was nice (could do with more hae koh).
A great place to get your yong tau fu fix instead of having to go to...
