No Comparison, No Pain – A Disappointing Bak Kut Teh Experience in KL
During my recent trip to Kuala Lumpur, I decided to try two different bak kut teh spots — and let’s just say, the contrast couldn’t have been starker. One of the places I visited was 友誼Bak Kut Teh. Unfortunately, it was a letdown on multiple levels.
Both the soup and dry versions lacked depth in flavor. The herbal essence — the soul of any good bak kut teh — was practically non-existent. The pork had a lingering gaminess that was off-putting, and the selection of ingredients was disappointingly limited. To top it off, a handful of napa cabbage was used as a filler at the bottom of the bowl, which didn’t do much to help.
It wasn’t until we were nearly finished that I noticed this place is frequently used for tour group meals, which explained a lot. The food felt mass-produced, optimized more for efficiency than taste. While they may continue to do steady business thanks to busloads of tourists, I can’t say I’d ever return — or recommend it to anyone looking for authentic...

A bit disappointed that it was not served in a claypot. There're pork belly, pork ribs, mushrooms and veg. Didn't order rice and I think it's the right call. Just drinking the soup may feel a touch too salty, but I think eaten with rice the soup would feel not enough of saltiness. Pork was tender but mostly flavourless. It was to be eaten with soy sauce, chili and garlic.
I think the Chinese herbal flavour was just okay. I love Malaysian bak kut teh for a kick of Chinese herbal flavour, but this place toned it down. I had no idea if that's their attempt of trying to suit a wider range of tourists. For me it's missing the mark on the depth of flavour.
The inside of the place was air-conditioned, but I saw they asked people to sit outside even though there're seats inside. It was hard to eat a hot dish in scorching heat and sweating.
As with most, if not all, bak kut teh places, soup...
Read moreI recently visited this establishment and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. I ordered Bak Kut Teh for two persons along with two Chinese teas. To my surprise, the total bill came up to RM137. When I inquired about the unusually high charge, the lady boss informed me that she had mistakenly keyed in two pots for two persons instead of just one. Despite clarifying that I only ordered for two people, she still asked me to pay RM130, which was unreasonable.
Beyond the billing issue, the quality of the food was also underwhelming. The Bak Kut Teh was poorly prepared — it included canned mushrooms and cabbage, which are not typical ingredients in a traditional recipe. The pork tasted frozen and lacked freshness, significantly affecting the overall flavor of the dish.
This was by far the most expensive and least enjoyable Bak Kut Teh I’ve ever had. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously to improve both their service and...
