Chanced upon “Claypot Sifu Restaurant” when browsing reviews for good food in KL. When I stepped into the restaurant, the supervisor gave me a good introduction to the menu, she recommended their signature dish Shenzhen Authentic Chicken Claypot. I also bumped into the head chef/owner who happened to be in the shop when I visited. He is smiling and friendly. I happened to know that he owns another restaurant “Steam Era Seafood Steamboat Restaurant” which we coincidentally visited it one night before. We had an enjoyable time in Steam Era as the food there was one of the freshest and nicest that I ever had. Steam Era is a nice restaurant with great food concept. Though we had spent around RM350 for the two of us but it was still money well spent as we can’t stop praising the food in Steam Era. I told the head chef/owner that I am happy to know that Claypot Sifu Restaurant is under him and I am excited to bring my husband to try the famous Claypot Chicken.
Perhaps is Father’s Day and they were understaffed as the staffs were very busy and they told us that there are not enough manpower. We had a plate of fried rice while waiting for the Claypot chicken to be ready. The fried rice is really fragrant and delicious that I ordered another plate of fried rice. We had waited for quite a while for the Claypot chicken to be ready. After waited for some time, we smell a strong burning smell from the Claypot and we feedback to the supervisor. She immediately off the fire and said that the Claypot chicken cannot be eaten anymore (We have not eat any) as is already burned. She placed an order for another claypot chicken and this time she specially asked the other staffs to come and stir the claypot chicken from time to time. I am thankful that the Myanmar staff came over a few times to stir our claypot chicken to ensure that it is not burnt. We finally managed to eat the claypot chicken after waited for quite some time. Unfortunately, the claypot chicken was huge disappointment. My husband commented that some of the chicken are very hard and can’t really bite through it. I politely asked the supervisor is the chicken a special range/type of chicken, or is the chicken undercooked or overcooked it? The breast meat is ok but some of the chicken parts are really rubberish and we can’t bite through it. She brought the Claypot chicken to the kitchen and after that she said the chicken is like that, still can be eaten. We continue to eat it (Trying to eat only the breast part that we can bite through it and spit off the rubberish part that we really can’t bite through it). Eventually we still left about 1/3 to half of the Claypot that we really can’t eat. It was really very lousy and inedible. Is the worst chicken that we ever had. I told the manager to take away the remaining Claypot chicken and just proceed to make the soup base for us to eat our steamboat. The manager asked whether we want to pack the remaining chicken, I told him is really inedible, we eat a little and spit a little at the same time. We can’t continue with the chicken anymore. They proceeded to make the soup base so that we can eat the steamboat.
Shortly after, we heard that another table was having the same issue as us. The guy was trying hard to chew through the chicken, I think the lady has given up in eating the chicken and they also returned the remaining Claypot chicken to the kitchen. The guy even used the chopstick to try to poke through the chicken to show the supervisor that chicken was too hard to chew.
The supervisor tried to explain to us that the issue is likely to be from the chicken supplier as they had ordered from a different supplier today. She said we are the fourth customer complaining about the chicken.
The total bill is RM 216.65, although we had a 10 percent discount off the total bill, it is still very expensive to eat a RM88 claypot chicken which is very lousy and inedible and is suppose to be their signature dish. I would not recommend it. You can visit Steam Era which is under the same owner to have a good and worthy...
Read moreDuring our recent visit to Claypot Sifu Restaurant, we were greeted with a warm and enthusiastic welcome by the waitress, who was eager to provide recommendations and ensure we had a delightful dining experience. Her energy and passion for the food truly set the tone for the evening. Adding to the charm, the owner, who is also the chef, made an effort to visit each table and engage with the guests. This personal touch created a friendly and inviting atmosphere, making us feel valued and appreciated. The meal itself was a light-hearted and enjoyable affair, with every recommendation turning out to be a hit. One of the standout dishes was the Teochew Preserved Vegetable Omelette. It was perfectly fluffy and flavorful, leaving us wanting more. The Pork Knuckle was another highlight; it was excellent, though we felt it could have been elevated further with more fatty meat. The Wild Mushroom Chicken Claypot was an absolute must-order. The soup was simply amazing, rich in flavour and incredibly satisfying. Another notable dish was the Tiger Prawn and Meat Crab Porridge. The ingredients were fresh, making it a delectable and hearty option, though it’s best enjoyed if you have a hearty appetite or are sharing with a group. However, not everything was perfect. The Claypot Chicken, unfortunately, fell short of expectations and was somewhat lacklustre compared to the other stellar...

I ordered a side of rice, I received a half-filled plastic tub. Maybe it's the norm to pay 4RM and get 7 spoonfuls of rice? There wasn't an option for more expensive rice. Is this a normal portion size?
I got the chicken claypot sifu. Flavours were incredible, but what a terrible eating experience. Almost all the chicken was bone or gristle, with only 10% perhaps being proper edible pieces of meat. This isn't an exaggeration. I was getting shards of bone in almost every bite, and most pieces were discarded for being mainly cartilage. I'm not sure if part of the experience is picking through meatless pieces of chicken, but it was disappointing to say the least. I mainly had onions as the main food item (they were delicious).
I'm conflicted because on the one hand, the flavours were wonderful. On the other hand, I really can't tell if I was purposefully mistreated for being a customer who ordered via the FoodPanda app. For 65RM, I really expected more pieces of edible chicken and a bit more rice. I'm currently browsing my hotel's room service as I'm still hungry. I'd honestly try to get it refunded but I ate what they gave so there's no point. I'm not sure if I even want to attempt visiting in person with friends as it might be the...
