On our recent trip to Kuala Lumpur we decided to try some of the "street food" 煮炒 near our AirBnB. We decided on Onn Kee Claypot Seafood Porridge Restoran which was a few doors down from my fiancée's lunch with her friend just a couple of days ago.
This restoran (how it's spelled in Malay) offered indoor (aircondition and fan) and outdoor seating under an awning. That night proves to be a rather pleasant evening therefore the family decided to dine outside on the restoran's patio.
Service was prompt and you get to review the menu before placing your order with one of the staff. We decided to "take it easy" and give our stomach a break before we load it up again in the following meals. Kuala Lumpur is a food paradise.. comparable to Singapore but significantly cheaper. If we wanted fine dining we would have just stayed home. The attraction is the flavor, the taste, the culture of Malaysia cooking. Singapore's food court just don't make the cut. We ordered the claypot Lala porridge, fried tofu, deep fried bittergourd or some called it bitter melon, claypot pork belly cooked with salted fish, stir fried sweet potato leaves, and half a Chicken.
The porridge and fried tofu are non-extraordinary.. nothing to write home about. I love the bittergourd, how thin they are able to slice it. Makes it crispy in your mouth. Pork belly is also tasty but a bit salty for my liking. Perhaps it's the salted fish.. my future in-laws seems to enjoy it and apparently that's how it's prepared in Malaysia. The sweet potato leaves are "tasteless" according to them but it helps me to balance the flavor of the pork belly. But the chicken.. what can I say about the chicken. When you are in Malaysia.. you HAVE TO try their kampong chicken, known to some as free range chicken. They are not a plump and big as those in Singapore and in the US but goodness.. they are tasty. Secretly I felt that half a chicken for the 5 of us is too little.. I could have finish that myself ; )
It was a nice break from the "famous" food that we had and I thoroughly welcome the thoughtfulness of my fiancée to arrange this...
Read moreMy family and I dined at this establishment yesterday, and while the food was enjoyable, we felt compelled to share our experience regarding pricing discrepancies and poor service.
We ordered half a steamed chicken, listed on the menu as RM 55, but were charged RM 60. Similarly, the chicken liver/gizzards, advertised at RM 2, ended up costing us RM 4. When my elderly parents gently raised this concern with the lady whom we presumed to be the boss, she responded with a noticeable air of haughtiness, callously discarding the menu we were referring to. Her dismissive demeanour extended to verbally instructing us to disregard the menu prices entirely and concentrate solely on the amounts listed on the bill.
Additionally, be cautious about the pricing structure for the porridge — it is per person, not per pot. This was unclear until we received the final bill, leaving us surprised by the significant difference in cost.
Service was unfortunately dismal; there was only one overwhelmed server for the entire packed restaurant, managing both dine-in customers and numerous food delivery orders. The lady whom we presumed to be the boss treated the server disrespectfully, shouting and scolding in a demeaning manner, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for the diners within earshot.
Despite the good food, the misleading prices and the poor treatment of the server have left us with an unpleasant experience. Regrettably, we won't be returning, and we hope this review helps others make informed decisions about their...
Read moreOn that short stretch of Jalan Barat, I have tried the now slightly disappointing New Ocean Restaurant on one end and the delicious but slightly pricier Claypot Sifu on the other end. Somewhere in between there is Restoran Onn Kee Claypot Seafood Porridge. As I dig into my archive again, I visited this restaurant late last year for a late lunch with a friend. The following dishes were ordered:
Century Egg & Pork Claypot Porridge ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Smooth and flavourful porridge that befits its reputation as a restaurant that specialises in porridge.
Stir Fried Bitter Gourd with Siew Yuk ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This dai chow dish has a generous portion of sliced bitter gourd that has been prepared sufficiently to give you a satisfying crunch while maintaining just a little bit of bitterness to keep you wanting for more. Together with the Siew yuk, you get an added layer of flavour that earns this dish 5 stars.
Hokkien Mee ⭐⭐ It has that smokey flavour but too bad, it was just too oily. If the bitter gourd dish with Siew yuk was not oily then why is this plate of hokkien Mee so oily?
It's quite clear to me that my next lunch or dinner will be at Restoran Onn Kee Claypot Seafood Porridge when I visit the TRX Mall again. The good thing about this mall is that its surrounded by some nice restaurants so you don't really needed to limit yourself to satisfy your hunger within the...
