Sun Yuan Foong It is not IG Vintage. Nor Kor Cha Bi Vintage. It is just Tired, Old, and Given-up!
Sun Yuan Foong used to be my favourite Kopi Tiam in Ipoh. It served delicious food, and heavenly coffee! But the last few years, especially with the demands of the pandemic, have proven to be too much of a challenge for it.
A recent visit found the soft-boiled egg and toast abysmal. From the photograph, you can see that the egg is more a soft hard-boiled-egg, than a soft-boiled-egg. Instead of a runny yolk, one gets the texture of dry cottage cheese.
Hoping that the coffee will lighten the offence was futile. It was just as bad as the egg and toast - the coffee was lukewarm and insipid. Akin to dishwater from a rinsed coffee cup.
Such products would never have left their kitchen in the past. The present management now is obviously not bothered with pride in their products. The peanut butter toast was the only redeeming feature of the entire experience. Even then, it is a far distant version of the superb peanut butter toast of the old Sun Yuan Foong.
The slide in quality could perhaps be attributed to the fact that the entire operations of the coffee shop is now handled by foreign workers. From the service staff, to the ones preparing the food and drinks.
So sad to have lost my favourite Ipoh...
Read moreI was trying to get into its next door neighbour but the queue deterred me. But boy what a serendipity. I enjoyed my breakfast here. Service was friendly and efficient. We ordered curry mee, yong tau foo, and toast with soft boiled egg. Oh, it'd be a crime to not order the famous White Coffee.
Curry mee: It packs a punch butnot overwhelming. The texture of the noodle is firm. And the bowl comes with a fried pig skin soaked in curry. Delicious!
Yong Tau Foo: Thumbs up for the homemade meat balls.
Toast with soft boiled egg: Not my favourite. The toast is neither toasty nor soft.
White Coffee: Yep, I like this. It’s flavourful but not too sweet.
Pro tip: I saw a few patrons ordered wanton mee from the more crowded coffee shop next to this and brought it to this coffe shop. I suppose as long as you order some food from this place, the owner will not chide you for doing that. Malaysian hospitality...
