Look, sometimes life is so hard you need something stiff to go with your coffee.
Kedai Kopi Ah Chow, located on the famous White Coffee belt in Ipoh, holds its own among the heavyweights for one thing. The fusion coffee is a must-order, a giddy concoction of liquor + white coffee which delivers a creamy smoothness, a divine mouth-feel and a swift kick to your gonads, I mean consciousness. This unique selling point is the one constant that has kept this coffee shop afloat for decades, while the food stalls have rotated over the years.
As for food, the curry mee is an easy recommendation for visitors here, but it's not among the best I've had. It's just creamy and aromatic with the bare minimum of portions and toppings to keep you fulfilled. If you like yours hot or loaded with aromatics and spices, look elsewhere.
I've not tried the other food items but I'll be real here. I came here just for the fusion coffee. That said, if you ever get tired of the swathes of tourists lining up for tourist coffee in Nam Heong and Sin Yoon Loong (whose standards have really taken a nosedive through the years), come on over to Ah Chow, an extra-casual coffee shop with the boisterous lady boss, teeming with locals enjoying their morning brew with one leg up the chairs. So looks like i will not be going back there today. I had an Iced Coffee and a Hor Hee at Ah Chow's (flat rice noodles with an assortment of fish cakes in clear broth). As a first meal of the day.... both were heaven sent! It did not disappoint at all. The light broth had a clean and refreshing taste, washed down by a satisfyingly thick and cold cup of caffiene laden iced Joe! No better way to start a day! The proprietors of the kopitoam & stalls were very friendly, this added loads of brownie points to the atmosphere. Seems there is one other Kopitiam that opens earlier but today was...
Read moreFirst time to ever try Kopitiam in Malaysia. I thought it's only 1 resto but there are actually 5+ stalls inside. Was only supposed to try the Curry Mee (mild curry flavor and just the right amount of spicy) but when we got seated at the table with a bubbly and friendly local, she also recommended we try the Hua Tiao Prawn Noodle, which was also very good 🥰 it looks simple but the sauce is a game changer (fish sauce and fermented chili, i think). Iced Kopi was strong, and I personally think the best food are situated in places like this ☺️ just be sure to save a picture of the menu or the picture of the food for easier ordering! Take note of these, which were very helpful to me: One - Satu Two -...
