The Story of 椰档咸鸡 (Coconut Villa Salted Chicken)
Two years ago, my wife and I, visited 郭师傅 (Mr. Kwot)’s stall at 阿B椰档, a small food court, based on a relative’s recommendation. We were immediately hooked on his salted “bearded chicken” 胡须鸡 (a free-range breed) — for its flavour, texture, and ginger scallion dipping sauce. We returned several times over the next few days for more. At the time, it was a little-known chicken rice stall in Ipoh.
Today, it’s heartwarming to see this delicious chicken gain wide recognition among both locals and tourists — especially after Mr. Tai (the 食古不化 columnist) reviewed it in the newspaper. These days, it’s not unusual to see a queue forming for a plate of salted chicken rice.
Price Reasonable by Ipoh standards: RM9.00 for a generous plate of rice with chicken thigh, served with pickles and a quality soup of the day.
Also had a glass of kopi O bing from the tea stall — RM2.70, kaw (strong) and satisfying.
History 郭师傅 (Mr. Kwot) was previously the sifu at a popular roast meats stall, 神仙飞过墙烧腊档 — one of several tenants at the original 阿B椰档 food court, which operated at the site now occupied by The Majestic condominium.
When the food court relocated across the road to its current location, 郭师傅 followed — but instead of continuing with the roast meats stall, he started his own chicken rice business. His boss at the time, Mr. Chan Har (of Chan Har Bookstore), chose not to continue the venture. That was fourteen years ago.
Another Must-Try Also worth mentioning is the rojak stall run by Madam Tan at the same food court. Her homemade keropok (虾饼) is out of this world. Ipoh’s rojak keropok scene is generally fantastic — but hers stands out for its crispiness, flavour, and the generous topping of ground peanuts — all for just RM1.50 apiece.
Service No complaints.
Atmosphere The food court is clean, organised, airy, and spacious — a comfortable spot to dine alone or with a group — with nostalgic long tables and benches reminiscent of school canteens. Bonus: good toilet facilities too.
