VACA LOCA — Restaurant in Valletta

Unfortunately, I recommend avoiding this restaurant. The service was extremely slow and the food disappointing. We ordered a starter and main and ended up waiting an hour for the main. Within the first 20 minutes of waiting a waitress explained it was busy so it would be a bit delayed but that the dishes would arrive in the order they had been placed, this was completely understandable and we were happy to wait. We then found that other table's orders (that were made after our order) arrived and that they had finished their meals before our one main arrived.

When it finally did arrive the waitress put the plate on the table without a word and left, no apologies for the delay or enjoy your food etc. Before this we'd also tried to get her attention to ask how much longer it would be but had been ignored twice. Had the main at least been good it might have made up for it but the beef was tough and chewy and not a lomo saltado as advertised: the sauce wasn't made from a soy sauce base or served with tomato, onion and coriander. It should be renamed or removed from the menu. Furthermore, given it was €26 you would expect a good cut of beef at the minimum.

We sent the plate back and complained. The other waitress, rather than just being friendly and saying sorry how can we fix it, was instead defensive and wanted to have a fight about it. Regardless of whether it was busy or whose fault it was, good customer service would demand a kind and friendly response to fix the problem. Fortunately, her boss arrived and managed the situation in a much more friendly manner and we resolved the situation amicably. Nous sommes hésitants devant la carte, et un premier serveur achève de nous convaincre en nous annonçant une "happy hour": un cocktail acheté, un gratuit. Nous nous attablons et, après une longue attente, une deuxième serveuse s'occupe enfin de nous. Nous commandons deux cocktails Singapore Sling, à base de liqueur de cerise. Pour l'entrée, mon compagnon souhaite le calamar croustillant, mais la serveuse nous indique qu'il n'y a plus de calamar. Mon compagnon demande les moules, mais il n'y en a plus non plus. Il finit, après avoir manifesté sa déception, par accepter de choisir les tacos. Je commande des arepas, ainsi qu'une paella valenciana pour deux en plat. Ensuite, nous attendons. D'autres clients arrivés après nous sont rapidement servis, mais nous continuons à attendre. Après une demi-heure, un troisième serveur nous apporte les cocktails, qu'il nous annonce comme des Passoa. Je lui signale que ce n'est pas ce que nous avons commandé, il se trouble, mais nous assure immédiatement que ce sont des Singapore Sling. Au goût, nous ne sommes pas convaincus. En même temps que les cocktails, il nous apporte les entrées... Mes arepas ressemblent à des empanadas. Je goûte et en effet, la farce ne correspond pas. J'ai très faim, donc je les mange quand même. Cinq minutes après, alors que nous avons à peine entamé l'entrée, le troisième serveur nous amène la paella. Mon compagnon lui dit que c'est trop tôt, il repart avec la paella. On ne nous a présenté aucune carte de boissons, donc nous continuons à boire notre Passoa... Après avoir presque terminé l'entrée, je demande au jeune serveur ce que j'ai mangé, il se trouble et me répond "Je ne sais pas, je pense que ce sont des empanadas". Je le pense aussi. Il me reste encore un morceau d'empanada, et il revient avec la paella, qui a réchauffé tout ce temps en cuisine. Elle est donc pâteuse. Dommage car elle était bien épicée. Nous mangeons tristement, on ne nous a toujours proposé aucune autre boisson. Nous demandons l'addition, bien décidés à fuir au plus vite ce chaos (trois serveurs pour 6 tables, pourtant pas de quoi être dépassé). Deux cocktails nous sont facturés, je signale à la serveuse qu'ils entraient en ligne de compte pour la happy hour, elle me répond que non, la happy hour s'arrêtant à 20h. Nous sommes arrivés à 19h55. Elle ne veut rien entendre. Je lui signale aussi que j'avais commandé des arepas et que l'on nous facture des empanadas. Elle s'en fiche. Dommage de gâcher une cuisine assez bonne par un service aussi...

First time we've visited this place was a lovely experience. Even though we found some plastic in the seafood that was too salty they changed the dish for a different one as it didn't feel right trying the same again. Octopus and drinks were delicious and we ended up happy. Today was an absolute nightmare. Not having octopus I tried paella, got plastic again in the seafood. Drinks were nothing fancy comparing to last time. Customer service disaster (different from last time). Telling us that it can happen sometimes and that their paella is famous with rubbery calamari wasn't going anywhere.. We left disappointed. There are fortunately many better places with stable high standard quality food and service than this one to go next...
