Rancho Viejo was our second choice, honestly speaking. The neighboring bar (our first choice ) stopped serving food at 11pm, so, we were then referred to Rancho Viejo. Bad move.
Seating was available and servers were prepared to take our order. Not being too hungry, but wanted a bite to eat, we ordered a carne asada burro (aka burrito) to share. When the plate arrived at our table, immediately we knew, it was not the kind of burrito we're use to eating. Keeping an open mind, we figured, whatever we were given will win our heart on taste. Um, nope. It didn't look good, or taste fresh. The meat must have been sitting in a container, then, re-heated on the grill. It just did not have the fresh meat cooked taste. And, as much as the condiments tray looked delicious, adding stuff on the burrito did not make a huge difference. Meat was tough, over cooked and the flour tortilla was on the burnt side. What made matters worse, the tortilla fell apart in no time. What a hand held food item was supposed to be, was being eaten with a fork. Trying to keep an open mind, I had to officially say, the burrito was awful. The worse in Mexico.
Now for the Paloma drink which was on the menu and the server did not know it existed. The drink was also awful. It tasted more like a margarita. We had asked the server again, was Fresca soda used. He reassured us, yes. Not quite convinced, the so called Paloma drink was consumed anyway. Definitely not the best.
The server was a nice kid. About the only thing good about our experience at the place. Oh, the view from across the street was nice too. The lit palm trees were the highlight of the evening. We stayed til midnight and returned to our resort after an hour out.
The ambience? Not much to be said as we sat outdoors like the rest of the restaurant/bars on the street. Rancho Viejo was situated right between two loud bars. I guess you can say, they did not need any music.

Read moreGood location, upstairs has ac, large portions, food quality is average, prices reasonable, bathrooms filthy with no sink, service slow (took an hour to receive meals for three), and despite all of this we we’re leaving on a happy note until the cashier added 10% to our bill for currency conversion from USD to pesos. I went ahead and paid her 9% of that offered to pay the rest (59 cents) if she would give me the change in US currency. She refused and started screaming at me “This is Mexico, leave, just leave”. I told her this is no way to treat a paying customer and my family left. It’s not worth the hassle dealing with the incompetent cashier at this establishment. Go elsewhere for a better dining experience where they appreciate...
Read moreRancho Viejo is muy delicioso! We came back for a second tasting after having the best shrimp / camaron tacos on the malecon. It's a small spot that gets crowded and can be pretty loud with all the road noise and music. But the beach is right across the street and it's a beautiful weather while we visited.
We returned for shrimp tacos but also ordered the shrimp and asada molcajete. RV2 offers a variety of either fried or grilled tacos. Most of the other restaurants we visited had only fried shrimp.
Service was quick, friendly, and efficient. Each order includes a variety of chips and salsas for the table. Our meal was delicious, I would recommend stopping in when they open (typically later...
