La Providencia — Restaurant in Oaxaca

I had a reservation for New Years Eve which was also my husband’s birthday and I wanted to do something special for it. I made the reservation via email with a two possible four top. I received a response “Ok! That’s great. We’ll do. Thanks !” from Javier. I decided on 12/30 while in Zipolite to stop by the restaurant to confirm my reservation and a special dessert. I was greeted by a man who seemed to be disturbed by my presence and proceeded to yell at me “NO” every time I ask him about my reservation. I told him I had confirmed via email my reservation for 4 and he said “NO!, only 2!” I told that was ok, since he lost his mind over it. Then I ask for something special for the dessert and he said condescending that maybe he can “ put a little candle or something.” This whole interaction left a bad taste in my mouth. I decided to check somewhere else (El Alquimista) which was very accommodating to my request. I am so thankful I didn’t waste my money over at La Providencia. I found out from my host of my AirBnb that it was the head chef/co-owner/boyfriend of restaurant who I was being yelled at by. The restaurant is not that fancy for the attitude I received. The restaurant itself is on a corner of a dusty dirt road with lots of cars driving by. The space is kind of run down itself and loaded with mosquitoes, sewage smell and no where near the beach. I had a wonderful New Year’s Eve celebration with my husband and two friends at El Alquimista on the beach with an amazing 4 course meal. It was a celebration to remember. I did bother canceling my reservation with La Providencia due to the ridiculous rude treatment from the chef/co owner. We had dinner at La Providencia in February, 2021. Friends made reservations for six of us, three couples. We arrived and were escorted to the seating area, where we enjoyed wine - ours was a nice merlot - and ordered from the menu. Then we were seated at our table. Our appetizers and salad arrived first. The "house" salad was a delight, garnished with sliced mango and apples and the dressing was flavorfully home made mustard vinaigrette. I ordered the beef medallions in red wine and rosemary reduction. It was served with sautteed potatoes, green beans and rice. My hubby ordered the shrimp with tamarind sauce, on a bed of rice noodles, broccoli and onions. The presentation was outstanding. Mine came with two generous beef medallions and his contained six jumbo shrimp. We split our orders and shared them as a surf and turf. Everything was absolutely mouthwateringly delicious! The service was impeccable and the live music by Asnos Cuerdos was wonderfully entertaining. We had flan for dessert and Amaretto.  The big surprise was how reasonable the bill was for such five...

We went to La Providencia for our 6th wedding anniversary while we were on vacation in Zipolite. The food was very good. Highly recommend the fried goat cheese appetizer and the shrimp with tamarind sauce. The vibe of the restaurant is also very cute. However, I will say the service was lacking. Ordered water that never came and could not get a waiters attention to order another round of drinks, so didn’t have anything at all for much of the meal. The owner did apologize on our way out and said they were short staffed; we weren’t upset or anything. These things happen.
