The food was good, but not really good. Nice atmosphere but service was lacking.
The drinks were pretty good but the food was nothing special. It was the most expensive restaurant we have been to so far but the food was not better than other restaurants.
Cauliflower with mole peanut sauce was the best thing. Tuna steak was good. Duck tacos were not great. Better tacos at a taqueria. I think they needed a sauce or another component. And yes I did put salsa on them.
The salsas and chips were good. I really liked the orange one.
We asked for a straw for our cocktails but was told they don’t have them since they are a sustainable restaurant. Fine, but if you are sustainable restaurant why do you use the cheapest worst tiny little paper napkins!? Cloth napkins are far better and more sustainable!
But the biggest issue with our meal was the very slow service. Our waitress was nice but I think she had way too much going on. There was only two other tables when we got there. One of which was leaving. And when we left there were only 4 tables. But she was the only waitress so she was stretched too thin.
It was unfortunate since we wanted to order another cocktail. We finished ours before the food came. Asked to see the cocktail menus. But by the time she came to take our order we were nearly done with our meal. So we just didn’t have drinks while eating which was unfortunate.
Overall they just need another server I think to ensure things are getting done faster. Especially waiting a long time for the bill when we were done and trying to go meet up with friends. They offer a tasting menu which seems like it would require a lot more staff to give an...
Read moreWORST meal EVER! Food was absolutely terrible! I had diarrhea all day the next day from eating here.
Came here in December 2020 because of all the good reviews but was thoroughly disappointed. Ordered the shrimp ceviche, the bone marrow dip and 6 different tacos.
First, the staff spoke no English, so communication was very difficult. I asked for hot water? They brought me cold water with ice. No big deal. I asked for utensils and napkins multiple times and we didn't get this until half way thru our meal. Whatever, maybe it's lost in translation.
The food was horrible! The shrimp ceviche had raw shrimp that was not even cooked in lemon. Normally I like raw shrimp as a sushi, but not like this. The ceviche had no flavor but instead it tasted like sewer water! The bone marrow black bean dip has just a black bean paste, couldn't taste the bone marrow at all and we kept looking and turning over the mush and still couldn't find any bone marrow. Definitely bait and switch. Moving onto the tacos, they charged us $70 pesos each, total rip off. Each one was teeny tiny and all of them tasted like poor quality sewer water. The duck one was sooo dry that the duck meat was poking my mouth, the pork belly one was basically chewy pork rind that was over cooked. The steak one was so bad we took 1 bite and left the rest. The only eatable one was the sweetbread and that was over fried and burnt in the middle. All used chewy poor quality ingredients and had no flavor or nasty flavors.
When our bill came out, they also charged us extra for things we didn't even order. Super expensive even without the mischarge, total rip off! Holy cow! Absolutely...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I wanted authentic local Mexican food while on our all-inclusive at Ocean Riviera Paradise. Based on previous reviews, we decided to try out Axiote. We ordered duck tacos, enchiladas, pork belly tacos, and roasted octopus. Every single dish was carefully thought out. From presence to flavour, everything was to die for!
We decided to come back the following evening to finish off our last supper in Mexico with a familiar bountiful taste. We ordered duck tacos, enchiladas, slow roast pork tacos, and bone marrow with corn and spicy fried beans. All was more than exceptional.
My girlfriend had a fainting episode that required ambulance attention during our visit there. All there staff was genuinely concerned, acted quickly, and made sure that she (as well as myself) was taken care of. Police and EMS arrived promptly, and discharged her accordingly. The restaurant and staff insisted that our meal and drinks were paid for and taken care of, and that it is was a gift from them to us. I cannot even begin to start how grateful and appreciative I am for them, along with their hospitality.
Now I never write reviews, but Axiote, hands down has the best Mexican food in Playa de Carmen, and best Mexican I have ever tasted ever!
Thank you! We will come back for sure.
