I had a very bad experience here the other day. I was dining solo and I tipped on my bill what I wanted to tip. This server, don't know his name but he has a gold tooth. Would not let me leave unless I tipped him more money. Absolutely obnoxious and terrible service. The guy didn't do anything to deserve a bigger tip then what I was giving him. No WHERE does it say on their menu that you have to tip a certain percentage. I understand for groups and parties usually gratuity is necessary but once again, I was dining solo. I would avoid this establishment at all costs this server is obnoxious and a straight scammer pretending like he doesn't speak English just trying to extort money. I was ready to just walk away because I paid more than the bill and left a tip but it wasn't enough in his eyes. What a joke of hospitality and service. I don't mind tipping for food service but this felt like extortion and a scam to be honest. I feel very wronged.
And as far as the food goes, this place would be out of business in California, straight below mid grade sushi, rice was old and cold. The Saba Mackerel was old. Some of tuna nigiri cut improperly, like you could see the sushi rice through the tuna. This is coming from someone with years of experience as a sushi chef at a high level Michelin restaurant.
I honestly would just avoid Sushi period in playa del carmen. And this place is a scam. If you like gringo/mexican sushi rolls this is the place for you I guess because the nigiri is bad, the quality is BAD. Why are they importing trash fish when there is a coast right there? Bonkers place, bathroom is also smelly and leaking water from the air conditioner unit. It will stop on your head when you use it. Avoid...
Read moreEveryone claiming the sushi here is good definitely has not had real sushi before. Firstly, most items on the menu have cream cheese—telltale sign of inauthentic sushi. I ordered a hot roll, the Be Roll. This is has got to be the worst sushi I’ve ever had, far worse than even cheap takeout sushi that has traveled halfway across the city. The tempura batter that covered the entire roll made the sushi so incredibly greasy and was not crispy at all. Most importantly, there was SO MUCH RICE esp compared to the filling inside. Every bite was a huge clump of rice, I ended up just eating half of each piece and leaving the remaining rice. This was also the same case with my friend’s roll. It is clear that ingredients are skimped out and the chefs are inexperienced. The rolls were less filled with fish at the ends than at the middle, showing a lack of culinary skill.
Not only terrible tasting sushi, but service was unacceptably slow with no apologies. We waited a full 50 min for two rolls of sushi. Only 2 rolls!! It was around 10pm and restaurant was not that crowded. Imagine waiting 50 min and end up with beyond disappointing sushi.
Ambiance was nice but has zero weight against the food and slow service.
Sushi club, you guys need to please taste your sushi...

The atmosphere at Sushi Club is definitely pleasant — modern, clean, and welcoming. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to the setting. The sushi was quite bland, and surprisingly they didn’t bring any ginger or wasabi alongside it, which are basics you expect at any sushi place. The flavor combinations also felt off — I don’t understand why Philadelphia cream cheese ends up in so many rolls here; it takes away from the freshness of the fish.
The ramen also needs a lot of work on the flavor — it came across as flat and uninspired rather than rich and comforting.
On top of that, the service had an awkward moment when the waiters suggested the tip amount they thought they deserved. For me, a tip should be earned through the service experience, not requested outright.
Overall, great ambiance, but disappointing food and a service practice that left a bad impression. Plenty of other places in Playa with fresher sushi, more authentic touches, and better...
